If you are the owner of the building what other options you have?.

Dozens of baby ring-billed gulls were intentionally blown off a Pickering building with a high-powered water blaster Wednesday night, a local animal charity is alleging.

“Apparently there were complaints in the building about the nesting colony and the landlord took it upon himself to hire someone to deal with it,” said Toronto Wildlife Centre executive director Nathalie Karvoven. “And there’s absolutely no way that someone could have not known there was dozens and dozens of little tiny, fluffy birds being blasted off the roof onto the pavement. So, after the first one happened, how could anyone not know?”

The impact of the water blast sent birds, the smallest weighing about 68 grams, onto the pavement one storey below. About 14 birds were found dead by SPCA investigators and volunteers, some in a dumpster.

Two more birds had to be euthanized at the Toronto Wildlife Centre because of smashed bones in their wings and legs, said Karvoven.

At least 34 birds have been brought to the centre alive and will be cared for as orphans until they’re strong enough to be released into the wild. During the alleged attack on their nests, the parent birds reportedly flew around “franticly, unable to stop the cruel act,” according to the charity, which focuses on assisting injured, distressed and orphaned wildlife.
The ring-billed gulls, which nest in colonies, are federally protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, which means their nests, eggs and fledglings are protected from disturbance or destruction during the breeding season, according to Environment Canada spokesperson Mark Johnson. He verified that Environment Canada has received a complaint and dispatched a wildlife officer to review the issue.

Karvoven said that whoever is responsible could face charges under the act, as well as animal cruelty charges.
Records show the building in question, at 940 Brock Rd., is owned by GTA Industrial Properties Inc. The company did not return a request for comment Friday.
Debby Houghton, an SPCA officer for the Durham Region Humane Society, said Friday that there is an ongoing investigation.

Asked if she believed the birds were intentionally blown off the building, Houghton said: “Right now it seems that way.”
She added that several tips came in, one, for example, describing someone standing on the roof of the building hosing down the birds.

Karvoven said in a news release that it was unfortunate the property owners “acted with such disregard for the suffering of the birds.”

“There are always better solutions for conflict situations with the wildlife that share our communities with us, and we really encourage people to research those options before taking any action,” she said.

What is going on lately with so many cruel people taking on defenceless animals.

Come on, farmers laugh der head off at city folks. The owner do what had to be done! boohooo

that may be true but just because farmers break the law, doesn't mean everyone can...ever hear of two wrongs don't make a right?

It is against the law to interfere with nesting birds....in any way shape or form.

I worked at a place in north york and there was a starling who made a nest about the garage door in the unit next to the one I worked at. We had to go out there for smokes and I watched while a nest was built over about a week.......then I saw the birds bringing worms and stuff to the nest...i didn't see the chicks but heard them....

then I came in one day and saw that the area was filled in with spray foam....I called the animal control and they sent someone out....she dug out all the foam thinking the nest was still in there because the mom bird was freaking out.....the owner of the company came out and the animal control officer told him: back off, if you don't, you'll be arrested....if the nest is still in there, you'll not only be arrested for interfering with me, but for blah blah subsection blah blah and that carries an fine of up to blah blah (I think it was 5 grand).

Personally I hate gulls, they are nothing but shit hawks IMO but that doesn't mean you can just destroy any nesting area.....one thing people don't realize is that birds eat bugs.....if you kill off too many birds, you'll be overrun by bugs........

If I remember right Gulls are protected....that the people who did this can be
fined for each Gull that died.......on top of jail....but it could have changed...
This is just being cruel.....

since your writing and handle indicate you`re a redneck, i`ll explain the difference to you:
in caveman days, they didn`t have walmart or loblaws to go to to get their food...so they had to eat what they could catch.
since we`ve fucked up most habitats for wildlife we have to enact laws to protect them......otherwise we could end up like north korea...their food production and distribution is so bad that there are no more birds....they`ve all been eaten.

A good example of `seeing the error of our ways``is: lead paint. We discovered that it wasn`t a good idea to put lead into paint so we stopped. Another one is we used to dump toxic waste into our water supply.....we don`t anymore. The excuse that `we used to do it that way` no longer flies.....

BillyBob, I'm sure if the property manager had taken the time to call the Wildlife Centre this could have all been handled easily with no possible charges being laid. Honestly, some people really need to stop and think before they take action. It won't surprise me if one day we are reading a new story about you.

When I was a child one of the places I grew up was on a beach....One day my brothers and sister
found a Sea Gull with its wing hurt.....My mother fixed it.....We had a walk in shower, it was very big..
mom put him in there to rest up.....to make a long story short....the Sea Gull became a pet....
My Father loved fishing and when he would throw out the line the Sea Gull would bring it back for him...
It would also bring him small fish for bait........It never left us, would play with us kids...then we move back
to the Main House to come to Canada.....We had friends take care of him......

If they killed and ate the birds I wouldn't be so bothered, but to spray them just to get them off the building is sick.
