Edmonton teacher fired for giving 0 to a student that failed to hand in his assignment

An Edmonton high school teacher suspended for giving zeros was officially given the axe Friday in a letter from the Edmonton Public School Board.

Lynden Dorval was awaiting the results of a termination hearing and says he was holding out hope the board would reconsider.

Though he wasn’t shocked to receive the letter, he’s certainly not happy about it.

“I’ve been preparing, or trying to prepare, myself for it for quite sometime,” he said. “But it’s still distressing now that its here.”

The Ross Sheppard physics teacher — suspended last spring after he gave a student a zero for not handing in an assignment — now plans to seek legal council and file an appeal.

“I definitely will appeal the termination, even if I have to do it on my own,” said the Dorval, who still stands behind his opinion that a “no-zero” policy is detrimental to kids development.

No shit...this is totally ridiculous.....does the school board have a written policy stating plainly that if a teacher gives a student a zero they'll be fired? If not he has a strong (very strong in fact) case for wrongful dismissal.

I think those on the school board ought to be fired....for utter stupidity.

What's next? marking a student as present even if they're not?

I completely agree that this is ridiculous but it is not new! This has been happening for decades in many areas. I recall it happening in grade school within the catholic board, not the public board though. It happened in secondary school as well, just not as blatant as this situation.

I wonder if the student is a new citizen or not?

Just remember, these youths that are failing miserably will be taking care of us in the years to come!
