11 Accidental Discoveries

And the non-Newtonian fluid we all have enjoyed.

Silly Putty is a toy based on silicone polymers which display unusual physical properties. It bounces, but breaks when given a sharp blow and can also flow like a liquid. It contains a viscoelastic liquid silicone, a type of non-Newtonian fluid, which makes it act as a viscous liquid over a long time period but as an elastic solid over a short time period. It was originally created by accident during research into potential rubber substitutes for use by the United States in World War II.

I guess they missed that one.

Never knew that one.

How about the discovery of phosphorous by alchemist Hennig Brand? Hennig Brand was trying to develop a material that could be used to aid in transforming base metals into gold. Where did he look as a source to create this wonder material? Urine. Lots and lots of urine. Various processes of boiling vats of urine were used to reduce the liquid into a solid. Approximately 5,500 liters would be required to yield 120 grams of phosphorous. Soldiers were sometimes called upon to supply the raw materials.

The resulting precipitate was observed to glow in the dark, and when left exposed, sometimes spontaneously ignite. An artificial and more productive means of producing phosphorous was later discovered and its useful application in matches.

What about the discovery of a blow job when the cave woman tripped over a rock and her open mouth fell onto the erect penis of a sleeping cave man!

That was no accident. The guy left that rock there on purpose for her to trip over. This is still evident in man today. How many times have you been told that you left your shoes right where she could trip over them?

This explains a lot.

Then you'd think having size 16 shoes and a slightly clumsy wife would lead to more bjs....instead, she just falls the wrong direction 100% of the time.

You need to set your traps more carefully. :biggrin2:

Hmmmmmm

Oh Ms. Sarah?

Would you mind walking over here please? Pay no attention to the mounds of shoes strewn across the floor.
