16-year-old boy dies after trying to help struggling swimmers at Woodbine Beach

It is never smart to try to help drowning people without proper equipment.

Having said that, I don't know if I could just watch as people drowned either.

That is the dilemma most face. But you are right, instincts has a funny way of playing with your head.
 
Const. David Hopkinson of Toronto Police warned of the risks present at the beach. “The water at the west end of Woodbine Beach is lined with rocks and buouys, and has a very significant undertow,” he said.

It's the undertow that one can't see that will get you every time.

Very sad because his intentions were so honourable and brave.
