4-year-old son of Michigan sheriff's deputy accidentally shoots and kills himself

Because all law enforcement officers are highly trained in the use and storage of firearms, this is obviously the case where a smart four year old defeated the trigger lock, found the separately-stored ammunition, and get carried away. 'Coz there's no way a highly-trained law enforcement officer would leave a loaded weapon around.

Oh, wait...you said Michigan....well, that explains it!

Wonder who the NRA will blame on this one.....I suppose they could always go back to the ever reliable " Enforce the existing laws" but, oh yeah it was a Sherriff's kid........um...... never mind.

if the loaded gun and it seems it was, left in an accessible location, then I agree with what people are not saying.

The parents are at fault here. Criminal charges might be laid.

Hard to lay charges when they lose their child though.

this too is true
however you lay charges, hold a trial and if deemed appropriate you hand out a suspended sentence

I believe the death of their child is punishment enough.

So if the person who commits a crime suffers some emotional distress we should let them get away with it?

no

but I do hold that in some cases a conviction and suspended sentence serves justice

Parents should be teaching their kids about gun safety procedures.

A teenage girl was accidentally shot and killed Tuesday night in Johnson County while her teenage brother cleaned a gun.
Emilee Bates, who celebrated her 13th birthday Tuesday, was airlifted to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where she died, authorities said.

Deputies responded at about 8 p.m. to the home off FM917 near Joshua. Emilee’s 19-year-old brother was cleaning his guns when one went off, striking her in the stomach, authorities said.

The incident is being treated as an accident, and no charges are expected to be filed, said Lt. Tim Jones, a spokesman for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.
