One of our closest friend has an alcohol problem. We want to help and looking for advice.

She has been drinking daily for the last 15 years. She drinks when she wakes up in the morning and during the night at 3-4 am. Of course during the day. Her kids and husband have left her. She then mentioned to our son who is a friend of her daughter that she has cancer. We approached her and she is in total denial.

To make a long story short, would appreciate advice from those that have gone through it.

Thank you in advance.

1: What is the best rehab center in the GTA?
2: Is it covered by Ohip?
3: What other options are out there?.

There are detox drugs available, but they only work when there's the will for them to work. Other than that, it's basically locking them away while they go through detox and the withdrawal problems, but even after they still have to have the will to quit. Something like 80-90% of all rehab patients revert and drink again.

Without her agreeing and wanting to quit, there's little chance she will quit, short of a straight-jacket.

And no, it's not covered by OHIP per se, but some treatments may be covered through other sources such as work insurance schemes.

Covered by ohip and well established successful program. BUT, she has to want to get better. She is the only one that can make that decision

There is a 3 month waiting period with ohip and you have to be accepted. Others will cost you between 3 to 8 grand.

The OHIP plan, last I checked, is limited in what it covers. But things may have changed.

As for the cost, yes, that's about right for some rehab programs. Sounds expensive? Consider the cost of a six-pack every day for a year.

She has to consent to go on her own, and then probably the best person to ask to get her admitted into a program would be her own family doctor.
