Is too large an age gap detrimental to a relationship?
Or does it all depend on the type of relationship?

Frankly I really don't think it matters.

Rule of thumb: As long as she is older than your daughter, all is well

As long as her age doesn't end in 'teen' it's okay!

well, that old rule of thumb works pretty good:

Divide your age by 2 and add 7

So, if you're 40, that's 27......

If you're 30, that's 22.....

I dated a girl who was 21 when I was 42 and it did NOT work on so many levels......

I find that if the lady is too young the conversation is awkward. I try and stay within a 10 year gap.

exactly, if all they want to talk about is Britney Spears or Avril Lavigne and who they're dating, well, that gets old like totally.....lol.....

I like to stay within 10 years for dating purposes. For SP's it doesn't really matter as long as they are 19 and up.

What if you don't have a daughter or children for that matter?

What about nineteen?

Same rule applies. Personally, I don't know many 19 year olds I'd want 'a relationship' with, no matter how hot she is. I've got trouble working with them as most are so addled that they spend a whole lot of time just keeping it together and that certainly isn't my job. Aside from the fact I'm almost old enough to be their grandfather.
