Airport agents detain pregnant teen for gun design on her purse

Norfolk A pregnant 17-year-old, Vanessa Gibbs, was detained by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Norfolk International Airport, Virginia, because of a gun design on her purse. Gibbs was on a flight from Virginia to Florida when she was stopped.

The TSA, according to, said that the hollow gun design, a few inches in size, was a "replica weapon." TSA banned passengers from carrying "replica weapons" in 2002.

Gibbs, who was returning to Florida after a trip to Virginia, told News4Jax.com that she had no trouble with airport authorities at Jacksonville, but on her way back home, TSA officials at Norfolk International Airport stopped her. Gibbs said:

"I carried this from Jacksonville to Norfolk, and I've carried it from Norfolk to Jacksonville. Never once has anyone said anything about it until now."

She showed the gun design on her purse to the News4Jax.com, saying:

"It's my style, it's camouflage, it has an old western gun on it. She (the airport official) was like, 'This is a federal offense because it's in the shape of a gun. I'm like, 'But it's a design on a purse. How is it a federal offense?'"

The TSA officials detained her so long that she missed her flight back to Florida. She was sent to Orlando instead, while her mother,Tami Gibbs, awaited her anxiously at Jacksonville airport. The teen's mother said:

"Oh, it's terrifying. I was so upset. I was on the phone all the way to Orlando trying to figure out what was going on with her. It was terrifying."​

Hey, this story is old...I read that about a month ago.

I have no problem with them detaining her. Sent through the x-ray machine what do you think is going to happen? IMO this is no different than hiding a replica gun in your underwear for shits and giggles then going through the body scan.....

I mean seriously, even SAYING the word gun, or bomb, at an airport is an arrestable offence, what did she think was going to happen?

Exactly and I also noticed how she couldn't understand why she was stopped on the second flight using the fact that she wasn't stopped on the first flight as an excuse......Instead of thinking "oh wow, the first screeners fucked up" she was thinking the second set fucked up......

If I recall the image is actually made out of metal too, not like it is sewn on or an emblem or something.....
