Religion has been a huge target of the Left in this country for a long time. In their case, to replace it with the religion of Leftism. But I tend to agree about getting rid of religion. I was raised in a family of Catholics but only the kind that went to church on C and E. I never really bought into any of it. As I grew up and learned more about the history of the church....I couldn't move away from it fast enough! The problem is that it's made up of people. The church itself may have good intentions but look at it. The Vatican was once the 3rd largest gold reserve in the world. Look at the way the pope and cardinals live and dress. Look at all of the fine art they have collected over the decades. None of that looks or sounds like anything that Jesus would do or condone. That's completely ignoring the pedophilia and misogyny that relegates nuns to second class people in the organization.
I look at Christianity, Islam and others like most people probably look at those who worshiped the Greek Gods. They were just trying to explain how everything worked and to come up with a way to keep people from running wild all the time.
I don't think people need to be in a religion to be good. I think you can have perfectly secular laws that are perfectly moral as well. I think you can see them in the US Constitution. I just wish they had spelled things out with more detail than they did....just to make life easier for the rest of us. People are free. They have rights. They only place were we need to come together and write rules is where the rights of one person butts up against the rights of another....and to punish those who break those rules.
So marriage in child rearing...I think a stable relationship is best for the kid. Marriage is no guarantee of a good relationship or good environment for kids to be reared. It's just as likely for a kid from a broken home to grow up as a well-adjusted member of society as it is for the child of a marriage (a bad one) to turn out a psycho. You just never know. Hell, even within one family, the kids turn out quite differently at times.
