A courageous dog that had her snout sheared off while saving two girls in the Philippines has been flown to the University of California at Davis this week where veterinarians will try to fix her injuries.
Kabang has attained celebrity status in the Philippines after she jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle, saving the dog owner's young daughter and niece.
But the crash ripped off her snout and upper jaw, leaving the pup severely disfigured.
Veterinarians in the Philippines were unable to treat the injury and suggested that she be put down, by her owner rejected the idea out of hand.
After hearing of the dog’s plight, Karen Kenngott, a critical care nurse from Buffalo, New York, spearheaded an online campaign for the dog's care, raising more than $20,000 from 22 countries to cover the costs of surgeries, visas and airfare.
On Thursday, the injured pup was examined by UC Davis veterinarians, who said they were pleased with what they saw after conducting blood and urine tests, theSan Francisco Chronicle reported..
'We are confident we can improve her condition going forward,' said veterinary surgeon Frank Verstraete, of the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
The doctors expect that the pooch will have to undergo at least two surgeries over the next six weeks, one focusing on dental work and the other to address the gruesome wound on her snout.
However, the hospital said in a statement that there are no plans to fit Kabang with a prosthetic snout or reconstruct her jaw.
In December 2011, the daughter of Kabang’s owner, nine-year-old Dina Bunggal, and her cousin three-year old Princess Diansing, were about to cross a busy street in Zamboanga City when a motorcycle came speeding right towards them.
Eyewitnesses who later described the scene said that Kabang appeared out of nowhere and threw herself in front the vehicle just before it hit the two children.
As a result, the dog’s face was left horribly mangled after her snout became tangled in the spokes of the bike’s wheel.
The pooch got a rough start in life. As a puppy, she was found abandoned in a rice paddy by Rudy Bunggal, who decided to keep the dog and fatten her up in order to feed her to the family. But his daughter and niece convinced Bunggal to spare the pup, which proved fortunate for the two girls and their family.
