Are air-conditioning repairers being competent and honest?

now, with all that being said, and i agree it's bullshit, I bet they have to justify their travelling to the home to repair the unit. Did replacing the wire cost $25.00? do they have a minimum charge policy at the company? I know with mechanics, it would drive them batty when a car came "up" with a blown turn signal bulb or something like that. They'd get .25 units on their time card for that yet often the socket was rusty, or the screws holding the lens in place were stripped and it would take them an hour.......

I know a lot of electricians won't even bother to show up unless they think the bill will be over $200.00. Think about it, specially in toronto with traffic, it could take them 2 hrs to get there, 2 hrs back, $40.00 in gas.........then you have to present a bill for $400 to replace a light socket? Most people would shit......I'm not saying it's right, but I can kind of see their point.....

A big problem is that often if you just let a little job ride then you are getting fucked over. I had a business years ago that I'd go and take care of something and then it would turn out to be a 5 minute job. Then I'd just say fuck it wasn't a big deal. When it was a 2 hour job the customer would whine and complain and try to grind on the price of the job. I got tired of it and sold the business.
The new guy drives around with one of those wireless credit card machines in his truck and before he even takes a look tells the customer that it's going to be 2 hour minimum at 120 an hour. I say good for him.
I had to change my phone number because of all those grinders calling and complaining about the new guy and begging me to come out and help them.
Not my problem.

I hear you jesus, kind of the same thing with me too.......people just don't realize that those 2 mnute little jobs actually cost us the better part of the day, not including the big well paying jobs we're not doing since we're off on that 2 minute fix.....Luckily I had some customers that realized the value of my time and paid accordingly but most didn't......

I tell you though, it was mostly the well to do customers who gave me the biggest headaches regarding paying......the poor ones realized the value of my work and paid right away without any prompting. The worst was the customer who expected to receive $27,000.00 worth of work for free their logic being that since they paid me for $30,000.00 worth of work already I should "throw in" the additional $27K.....In other words, they wanted all the work for free....

oh, and just one more thing, funny how people react when guys like this are trying to make a living....yet they don't say boo in the media or do anything about the oil companies ripping us off for trillions of dollars, politicians ripping us off for billions, or other big companies ripping us off daily........

Actually the worst for me is people who think that their time is worth gold and yours is worth shit.
When the cable company is 15 minutes late I'm on the blower.
My doctor actually got a bill for making me wait two and a half hours past my appointment time. He refused to pay it but I told him that the amount that I billed was what it cost ME to come see him. I informed him that the next time I am booked I'll do the same and when he refuses then I'll send it to collections.
My life is too short to put up with bullshit.

I have to say, doctors and the cable company are the worst. When I went in for my first appointment with my eye surgeon, my appt was for 4:15...I was there at 4...and get this....there were 18 people ahead of me....EIGHTEEN.....now I can understand if one or two people too longer than expected, but how the hell can someone be so far backlogged?

When I finally got into see him I said to him: you know, it's a good thing I was called when I was, I was 2 minutes (Literally) from walking out the door....my theory is, if he is soooo disorganized he can't keep a simple appointment, what else is he disorganized about? Will be mix up my lens and put the wrong ones in?

I said to my neighbour who drove me (when he said to wait a little longer): If you were hiring someone, and they arrived 90 minutes late with no excuse, would you hire them? He said "no, you do have a point though....".....

I know a guy in the service industry, his boss tells him that there is a minimum of 4 hours for every call. Even if it is just a broken wire. He has to check the whole nit from top to bottom and burn up 4 hours before he can leave or be fired.

Fuck, there goes the neighborhood.

Oh Jeez . . . now Cardinal Fang and I may have to retract everything we just posted in Lou Stiffer's thread.

I've been saying this for years. Everyone is trashing everyone else's job at the glee of CEO's around the world. The conservative mantra is competitiveness lowers prices, yes this is true but too much competition in one industry kills jobs and puts entrepreneurs out of work too.

I know we're off topic based on this thread. Nobody wants to be ripped off but if we allowed people to earn a decent living perhaps then most would be more honest. We are over taxed, nickled and dimed to death and at the same time it's getting harder and harder to earn a decent living.

PS- who's buying the kitty litter.

It doesn't help that you have idiots in the work force either....let me explain:

Because the company I work for builds custom houses all over hell's half acre, some an hour a way, they pay us from 7 am until 8 to help compensate for the cost to get there......supposedly it works out at the end of the year between close places (20 minutes away) and far places (an hour). It really doesn't since gas has jumped 30% since I started.

So to make matters worse, and the idiots I work with, as soon as they arrive on site, they start working. I said to them "wtf are you doing"? Well we get paid from 7 am......well, I said, that is supposed to help offset the travel costs and if we actually work that hour, it doesn't.....wha?????

Let me explain: if it costs you 20 bucks in gas to get here, and the company gives you an hour's wages to make up for that, that's 20 bucks to you right?

uh huh

But if you WORK any time during that first hour, you aren't making anything extra right?

ummmm

So since you're working, they are getting that time you worked, NOT giving you anything right?

uhhhhhhh but they are paying us to work....

No you idiot, they aren't paying you to work, they're giving you an hour's wage to pay for your travel, gas, wear and tear on your car....

uhhhh but it's on our paycheque.....
