File this one under the "Are you kidding me?" category. While heading up towards one of our schools in the distinctive black and white cruiser I see a young man I'm familiar with in a souped up truck. We make eye contact, and then he proceeds to spin his tires. This makes that familiar screech and smoke that just makes my skin crawl. After pulling him over and starting the conversation with "Have you lost your mind" the young man proudly exclaims "You can't do anything about it anymore"
He then goes on to explain to me that the Maine Supreme Court ruled yesterday that burning your tires is now protected free speech. He goes on to explain that it was on the news, and internet. He cannot believe that I haven't heard. "I thought the cops would be the first to know!"
This young man (who is actually a pretty good kid) pulls out the cell phone, brings up facebook and goes to a page called the "New Maine News". For those of you who are not familiar with the "New Maine News", its a satire website along the lines of The Onion. Well written and very funny. Right after the headline of "Maine leads Nation in Wango Tango music play" was the story "Maine Supreme Court Rules Rubber Marks Constitutionally Protected Free Speech". You don't have to read much past the headline before you realize that the author is joking. I actually got a good laugh out of it.
Explaining the concept of satire was probably the educational highlight of that young mans morning. Just so I"m clear, No Judge in Maine has stated "“What good is a huge truck? What good are fat tires, a screaming exhaust set up, and a killer big block if all that power can’t be used to make a statement?” Nor is ripping the tires off your truck on a public way protected free speech.
Well played New Maine News, well played.
