VANCOUVER — Lenore Turton has been sick for 10 years, in and out of hospital for the last seven. The 30-year-old mother of four has a chronic case of anorexia nervosa, a psychiatric disorder associated with severe, self-induced weight loss. Ms. Turton is five feet, seven inches tall. Her weight fluctuates; on Monday, she was 96 pounds.
Unlike some anorectics, Ms. Turton doesn’t try to hide her condition.
“I understand that I’m sick and need to get help, and I know I could die if I don’t make the right choices,” she says. “A lot of girls will manipulate and lie, whatever they have to do to keep doing what they’re doing. I’m a little bit past that, after all this time. It’s pointless to stick with denial.”
After moving from Alberta to B.C. earlier this year, Ms. Turton made inquiries about local treatment options. She decided on an eating disorder program offered at St. Paul’s Hospital in downtown Vancouver. She completed an initial psychiatric assessment at the hospital, and late last month went to St. Paul’s for a second scheduled meeting with doctors.
The meeting never took place. Instead, says Ms. Turton, she was given a cursory examination by internal medicine specialists and forced into an emergency room, where she was held by four male security guards, stripped of her clothing, and tied to a bed.
