There are many cultures over the world that "pray" over plants before they harvest, and some after. The general point is that they believe everything has life and they are asking permission/forgiveness from the plant as well as thanking it for sustaining them. People used to make fun of this sorta tradition but I guess this sorta gives them some credence.
