A Dallas Police Department motorcycle officer was killed Saturday when a suspected drunk driver ran into him during a funeral procession for another police officer, the police department said.
Senior Cpl. Earl "Jamie" Givens had positioned himself to block traffic to the eastbound entrance ramp to Interstate 20 at Bonnie View Road around 5:30 a.m., the police department said in a news release.
Givens was stationary on his motorcycle with his emergency lights on when the driver of a Kia Sportage struck the officer at a high rate of speed, the release said. The vehicle struck a concrete divider and the driver remained at the scene until he was arrested, police said.

CALIFORNIA -- Nearly 1,000 people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving this holiday weekend in California. The California Highway Patrol released statistics Monday as they ramp up their efforts to prevent drivers from hitting the road while under the influence this Labor Day weekend.
As of 11:59 p.m. Sunday, 17 people were killed in traffic accidents. Of the deaths, one was a motorcyclist and two were pedestrians, the CHP said.
Officers arrested 969 people for allegedly driving under the influence. CHP officers began ramping up patrols on state highways Friday and plan to through Monday to catch impaired drivers and other traffic violators as part of the agency's annual Labor Day weekend crackdown.
The CHP's "maximum enforcement period" is slated to end at 11:59 p.m. Monday.
"Impaired driving remains one of the most serious traffic-related problems on our roadways today," CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said in a statement. "Let's end the summer safely and remember to designate a sober driver, wear your seat belt, and obey all traffic laws."

A woman was killed, her daughter seriously injured and the man driving was fine. He was drunk. Just happened in Oshawa last week.
This should NOT be an issue. Everyone knows better. It is just selfishness.

It may be just me, but people seem to be more irresponsible today, in every category of their lives, from health, finances, drug and alcohol abuse, their children, etc.
I know that this seems to happen more when the economy is good, but is no excuse to be anything less than a responsible adult.
