I was at a Furniture store 2 days ago and I asked them for a price discount. They asked me in return if I was a member of the police or local Fire Hall. I said 'No.' They stated that they give badge discounts, but could not give me the same if I was not a member.
I then refused to buy unless I received the same discount given to police officers and fire fighters. They eventually relented and gave me the same discount after I explained to them the ridiculous nature of their badge-only promotion.
Badge discounts are ridiculous for the following reasons, among others:
1) Police officers make double the salary and benefits of the average Ontario worker. Why give someone a discount who earns much more than the average person does.
2) Doctors - who save many more lives than any police officer or fire figther does - are not entitled to such discounts. A doctor has to be top of his/her class and go to school for 8 - 12 years, plus invest in opening his own practice. A doctor works longer hours than a police officer or fire fighter and has to perform at a much higher level than the other two professions.
3) Telling your majority segment customer that only a minority segment customer gets a price discount is bad for business - period. Who is stupid enough to tell someone that only certain customers get discounts while others won't?
