Bluesfest!

I know it isn't very bluesy this year, but who is planning on attending? Is there a show you're looking forward to?
For myself, I'm especially excited for A Perfect Circle, and that Death From Above 1979 has reunited is fantastic.

I can't wait. I have to miss a couple of days, but definitely The Dropkick Murphys. Kind of pissed that Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Mother Mother, and Jane's Addiction are all playing at the same time.

I am doing volunteer work for the fest, during the day. Which gives me the evenings free and a free pass for the whole show. I am hoping to catch lots of it.

I am excited about:

Rocket Rached and the Fat City 8

playing Tuesday, July 12 - 6:15pm at the National Bank Stage.
They play swing/R+B kind of tunes. Love when a band has a good horn section. These guys would be great to dance to.

Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo

playing Sunday, July 17 - 1:15pm at the Hard Rock Cafe Stage.
It's always fun to hear these guys play and very dancable.

I will most likely be attending every evening, as there are so many bands that I want to see! I have been given some suggestions as well, but am certainly open to hearing more. I love these sorts of festivals as they are perfect for introducing new music.
I can't believe Coheed and Cambria will be playing. The Flaming Lips had a fantastic show last year. I got to see The Black Keys play in 2008, I'm excited to see them again. I love this video:


Hook: Jane's Addiction puts on a great show, but I'm also conflicted with Mother Mother. I will for certain be at the Dropkick Murphys.

Of course as in all things Murphy rules, and I am having house guests for three days in the middle of the festival. They are not music fans, at least this type of music, so I am going to miss out on Rise Against. grrrr I have been trying to see them for ages.

The good news is Metric is a late addition to the lineup and a friend of mine is a big fan, so we plan a good night. Win some, lose some.

I got to check out the Bluesfest venue this evening when I went for a volunteer session. They have changed the stages around in the main bowl, and for some reason the area in front of them seems a little smaller. Plus the fact that the main stage and the secondary stage are almost side by side right now. Should prove interesting.

The stage layout this year is just horrible - opening night was a zoo with very little flow space for (people) traffic. Last night wasn't so bad crowd-wise. I got to see Jose Conde at the National Bank stage, tucked away behind the war museum. A very small, intimate crowd with a few salsa-dancing couples. Ben Harper was lovely, as usual.

I am very upset that I missed out on the Black Keys With no word (either way) from bluesfest officials, I left around 10:15pm since it looked like they were rained out. I was already home by the time they came on stage. Wicked weather, though!

Well it is the end of week one, and I am going to my first show today... DROPKICKS!!!!!!

I will be there almost every night of the second week though.

Last night was an embarassment of riches with Death From Above 1979, caught a bit of Thornetta Davis, some of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, first bit of Mother Mother, and then the mosquitos drove me to Janes Addiction, which was pretty damn good by any standard.

Tonight my heroes from the early 80's, Cheap Trick, and maybe Death Cab for Cutie after.

Yes I was there for 7 nights...including that weather-related abrupt ending...glad not more were hurt...scary!

Hilights for me included the Arkells, GirlTalk, DeathFromAbove and Janes Addiction...we are lucky to have such a great event so close...
