Who would buy a 5 year old a loaded rifle for his birthday?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A two-year-old girl was accidentally shot and killed by her five-year-old brother with a rifle he received as a birthday gift, Kentucky authorities said on Wednesday.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Burkesville, Kentucky, a community in the south-central part of the state, when the boy was playing with the .22-caliber rifle and accidentally shot his sister in the chest, state police said.

The boy had received the Crickett “youth model” gun for his birthday in November, Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said. White said these guns have child safety locks, but “evidently when the gun was put up, there was a live round in it.”

He said no one realized the gun, which was kept in a corner, was loaded until the fatal gunshot.

White said the children’s mother was home cleaning house at the time of the shooting.

“She had just come out of the kitchen and went to the porch to throw out some grease from the skillet,” White said.
Kentucky State Trooper Billy Gregory said police were investigating and it was “a little early” to talk about possible charges in connection with the shooting.

White called the shooting “a tragic accident.”

“I’ve been the county coroner for 15 years and I think this is the first time I’ve had a case like this,” White said. “I’m hoping that parents will realize that if you have kids, you need to put the guns out of harm’s way.”

If this sounds familiar, it's because, sadly, it is. Earlier this month, a four-year-old shot and killed a deputy's wife with a handgun. The next day a two-year-old reportedly shot his mother in the stomach with a 9mm Glock. Two days later, another four-year-old shot a six-year-old in the head, killing him.

Guns

That is sad, are the parents being charged?.

I am going to weigh in on this

They should be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

A 5 year old should not have access to a fire arm.

In fact any child under 12 should not have access.

While I support firearms I still support intelligence.

The US is a joke with their gun laws! All the Senators that voted against some kind of gun control measure should be charged as well.

This is what makes me laugh. The parents here don't have the basic intelligence to understand the danger of allowing a gun within the reach of a child to yet they are intelligent enough by the current laws to be allowed to own a firearm.

I'm sorry but does this strike anyone else as strange?

Terrible tragedy that could've been avoided. First a four year old has no business getting a real gun and secondly if the gun is bought for him at four, he shouldn't have had unsupervised access to it at all... Third if he did have access to it, the ammunition should never have been near it.

Irresponsible parents doesnt even begin to address it.....

These parents should not be allowed access to guns period, first amendment rights be dammed I say.

you will find all guns have been removed from the property.

A - Assume every firearm is loaded
C - Control the muzzle direction at ALL times
T - Keep fingers out of the trigger guard until you are ready to pull the trigger
S - Prove your firearm is safe. before storage, before using, before handling.

Basic, basic firearm safety. Unfortunately, it seems some (maybe many) in the states because of the 2nd ammendment, don't take basic firearm safety courses. The 2nd ammendment doesn't say anything about being stupid.
And I agree, a child is unable to apply the consistency or exactness in regards to safety that is required to be a safe firearms owner. The parent was neglegent in their responsibilites to ensure that the firearm was safe (ie unloaded etc.) and that the child was supervised when using it. Unfortunately there are many victims in these stories. I'm sure that kid is going to need a lot of counciling.

This video would be funny, if the people in it weren't so frickin dangerous.....

Have to agree with Guido on this one, the gun control laws in the US are a joke.

The gun was a Cricket https://www.crickett.com/ . The National Post says 60,000 of these deadly weapons were sold for use by little kids including some for girls in pink. Sick, very sick.

What's the NRA going to say about this one? That the two year old should have had her own gun to defend herself or are they still gloating about the untrained by law enforcement , concealed gun carrying, vigilante in the convenience store ?

There's definitely a problem besides real-estate woes with our neighbors.

Oh my God, the mother of the dead two year old was interviewed claiming it was God's will to take her daughter. She should be tried, found guilty and put in front of a firing squad!

If I lost a 2yo child in such a senseless way, I imagine I would try to convince myself it was God's will as well.

It's the parents of the 5yo who should be strung up.
