Lenovo is another company that sells reliable systems.

As tboy mentioned, refurbished equipment is a great way to save $. Browse the tigerdirect.com site, they are a great company I have purchased most of my computer equipment from them. If you are looking for the newest, greatest hot-rod for a laptop, the best bet is to go to one of the sites where you can configure your own options. Most all of the makers have a site where you can do this.

Browsing, email, word processing, but you will want to go for more features if using it for gaming, video or image processing. The internet is a fantastic resource for comparing features and prices.

If possible I suggest you wait until late summer when there are back-to-school specials.
