There was a book out in the last few years that debunks most people's beliefs about the trends in the world. I think it makes a valid point that we are all buying into what the media is telling us versus actually looking for the truth. Regardless of politics, the media will always sensationalize things in order to get the viewers attention. But the reality is...

Poverty is down tremendously all over the world.
More people have access to electricity than ever.
Literacy is way up.
Life expectancy is up.
Democracy is up.
Endangered species are doing better.
Deaths from natural disasters are down to 25% of what they were 100 years ago.
Deaths from infectious diseases are way down.
etc. etc. etc.

you are thinking of better angels of our nature by Steven Pinker.. I haven't read it, but I do respect Steven Pinker as a psychologist, researcher, and writer.
