I don't know if VM costs them anything, but companies do pay the company that stores the Caller ID info every time it gets looked up.

Do you have any info on that? I ask because all your info is stored on the provider's computer and linked to the serial number of the phone (which is its identifier for the various systems to monitor so it knows where to route the call).
