Challenges of Getting to Mars: Curiosity's Seven Minutes of Terror

Planetary rover Curiosity will attempt to land safely on Mars at 1:31am Eastern time on Monday morning.

After completing an eight-month journey from Earth, the U.S. spacecraft will hit the upper Martian atmosphere at a speed of 21,000 kilometres an hour. And in just seven nail-biting minutes it must come to a relatively gentle stop.

NASA scientists call it “the seven minutes of terror.”

Yeah, read first thing this morning that it made it.....when reading about this the other day, the big issue is that they can't build in any redundant backup systems because it weighs so much as it is.......so if any one thing goes a little bit wrong, the whole sequence is fucked.......and they're so far away, and communications takes so long, that if anything did go wrong, they wouldn't be able to send a command to correct it.....
