Cellphone videos fight police abuse of power, experts say.

The investigation into the Toronto police shooting death of Sammy Yatim, 18, on an empty Dundas streetcar last week might turn on a trio of videos shot by bystanders .

The videos of the shooting, taken by YouTubers “Marko G,” Martin Baron, and later, of the aftermath, by “CaplinGrey,” made it to social media without interference from police, perhaps because they were shot from a distance, in the shadows.

But legal experts say that even if the videographers had been standing closer to the scene, they had every right to record those pictures without fear of confiscation of their cameras or intimidation by police.

You can tell when you hear Chief Blair he's worried and knows his boy did something he shouldn't have. I still can't understand why they would taser the kid after he's down and out. It seems to me it was to finish him off and attempt to claim they tasered him first.

The police likely did not have to kill him. Nevertheless, if you scare everyone off a street car and are carrying a knife, he knew or should have know he would be putting his life at risk. I do not like the fact in general that the newspapers are supporting criminals not the police.

I don't agree, this is NOT a police state and the officer shooting once maybe twice at an 18 year old with a knife alone in a bus maybe excusable, maybe not but firing 3 times, then lowering the weapon and FINISHING HIM OFF like a video game is inexcusable.

It was an execution and if anyone of us had done this in our own home to an intruder we would have been financially bankrupt trying to defend the charge!
