On Monday, notorious Boston mobster Whitey Bulger was found guilty of multiple gangland crimes that will likely send him to prison for the rest of his life.
At the time of his Bulger’s arrest, authorities found $822,000 along with guns, knives and other materials, including a Stanley Cup ring, stashed in his Los Angeles apartment. Bulger has agreed to not fight to retain most of the property, but he still wants the ring, as he says it was given to him by a third-party.
The Boston Globe reports:
The government could seek a civil judgment against Bulger that would require him to pay for millions allegedly stolen during his decades as a Boston crime lord. That ring could be used to satisfy some of that debt.
Otherwise, what’s Bulger going to do with it if he’s allowed to retain it? It’s not like he can wear it around prison or barter it for 1,000 cartons of Parliament Lights.
The more interesting story is how Bulger got the ring in the first place. Given Bill Simmons’ Boston connection and Bulger fascination, expect an upcoming six-part 30 for 30 about that very topic.
