Stores hate it when you use a CC to pay for small items like that because the service fee to have transactions processed is so high.

I had mine declined once when I forgot to let them know I was traveling. They wouldn't process the transaction until I called and confirmed my location.

I traveled to Quebec once (I think it was in the 80's) and, after gassing up the car I got home to find I had received a call from the credit card company to confirm that I was on the road. Of course it would be lot easier today--not too many people had mobile phones at that time, but I guess they are too busy now.

Same thing happened when I bought my first real computer in the mid-nineties. While I was still at the store purchasing the computer (about $1200 bucks as I recall) they called my wife at home to confirm that the card hadn't been lost or stolen. I was suitably impressed by the customer service at the time.

Had I been that store clerk I would have jumped over the table and his credit card would be the least of his worries.

Very true and you got that right again, you are sharp. The percentage that merchants have to pay vary from 1.65% to 3.75%. A killer on your bottom line after year end. But debit transactions are like 10 cents each. Guess which one I would choose.
