I see these ad all the time and was wondering is anyone has tried them. They offer free credit reports but there has to me a catch

I've never tried them, but you can setup an account at Equifax for a monthly fee. I use it and I check my credit ratings once a month. When I initially signed up I was just curious but I discovered some serious errors in some reporting with my credit. So I set out to resolve them (takes a LONG time) but my score jumped like 135 points once things were resolved. I used the service at equifax.ca. It's 20 bucks a month or something like that. Now, granted, I'm a computer hacker & privacy advocate SO...

Thanks for the advice. But why pay every month?.

Thanks Danny very helpful. As I understand it you can request 1 free credit report per year from the two credit from Equafax and Trans union. I did some research and found that paying for credit monitoring is just a waist of money. Im sure my credit is fine but it would be nice to check every once in a while

Equifax has a special offer where you pay only $4.95 for the first month. Just make sure you call them to cancel the service or they will keep billing you

I had no intention to do it, but I discovered several errors on my report so I started the process to fix them. That process is not overnight and took me months for each incident. You can do a one off I believe for a small fee.

It's definitely a good idea to check your credit rating a couple times a year.

Unless it has changed, you are allowed to get your credit report from Equifax every 6 months.

You can get a free copy but you have to mail documents to Equifax. When you have the paid plan you simply log into the system whenever you want and produce a new report. It's basically a "soft hit" which doesn't affect your credit score. It's kind of interesting to dig into your own credit rating/score.

FYI, the cell phone companies are pretty active with the credit bureau so if you pay your bill late it will definitely show up. Each creditor has a list of number of times late for 30, 60, and 90 days. 650 is apparently the lowest score you can have to get any love by the banks.

I just used creditkarma a few days ago and it's free and didn't notice any catch. I got my score instantly after answering some multiple choice verification questions. The questions were related to my recent purchases/loans so I'm sure they're actually accessing my credit history to verify me.
