It's not always a positive thing, sometimes some girls might have too much of a gap, usually those who are anorexic. Those girls would have stick-thin legs which are far from attractive either. The effect isn't simply due to how thin you are, it also depends on how wide your hips are. I've noticed that most elite athletic women don't have a gap because their muscles are so well built up in the thighs.

Regarding the "gap": BR did a good explanation but I think it has more to do with genetics than weight. I've seen big girls with big legs with a big gap, small girls with small legs with no gap. I've seen heavy girls whose gap resembles an inverted V or a Y and seen thin girls whose gap looks like a lower case n.
