I've seen what's under there a few times when they're servicing escalators at the train station. mostly empty space, but some heavy duty machinery that runs the escalator... if he fell into the empty space, he'll be fine, perhaps a broken bone or two, unless its a very high escalator in which case he might die of his injuries ... they'll eventually get him out the service access panels... but if he landed on the machinery... not so good.
