Yes, I grew up saying that. I think it stems from an old religious belief that when you sneeze you're expelling evil spirits, so that's why we say 'bless you'.

and yes, it is gross when people let the germs go everywhere!

Keep Kleenex in your pocket and offer to those who sneeze publicly. I used to carry kleenex, bandaids, cookies, etc. in my purse all the time when my kids were little and often gave them away to total strangers when needed.
