For those who love their dogs and who need to treat for flea and tick I implore you to please be careful with bravecto. Research, research, research. I have one dead dog who received it on may 12, and who was then critically anemic on may 23 and another dog who was given it the same day and now diagnosed with imt on Monday June20, and now also has low red blood cells. So her outlook is grave. Many will say there is no correlation, but there are thousands and thousands of cases where dogs have died or developed imt and other health and blood/immune related issues who've *coincidentally* taken bravecto. So it is up to you to decide.....coincidence/correlation? But more people need to be aware as many vets don't feel there is a connection, nor does Merck, the maker of the medication. luckily I have a relative that is in the biz and that will give unbiased input.

So the veterinarian from Merck(the makers of Bravecto) called me yesterday (June 30) to discuss their findings concerning my dogs death and my other dogs auto immune disease. He stated we can't say bravecto caused these"incidents" and we can't say they didn't. They record all complaints and issues and report them to health Canada. They are willing (yet I'll believe it when I receive it) to help with some of the vet bills. He said "when they do this it isn't because of guilt or an admission of wrong doing, but to encourage pets owners to seek treatment". The sad thing is, in order for them to take a complaint seriously they require the pet owner to do a necropsy on their pet and to then send in the results. Not everyone can afford to do this.
None of this will bring back my beloved dog, nor cure my other, her disease is for life, but it is something. Drug companies need to be held responsible.
My point in posting this....pet owners please be careful with what you give your babies, and if they become ill, research, question, and be vigilant, they deserve it.

We've never had problems with fleas thank god. Buy my dog is getting old and is probably going to have to go down soon for her owns sake. She's losing control of her hind legs, is falling more and more often and generally doesn't want to get up except for meals and very occasional potty breaks. :SIGH:

It makes you think about what chemicals are in these medications. A friend's dog had a tick recently, they removed it the old fashioned way, by rubbing Kerosene on the tick (to disorient it) and manually removing it.

Thanks Jingles, you can do a google search on the drug and quite a few links will come up with stories of owners who claim that bravecto caused their dogs death or illness. As far as using kerosene, never heard of that, but I'd be cautious as it is toxic as well. Ticks are a serious issue and we need to protect our pets from them, but with what, I'm now not sure.

It's tough, be it dog or human you never know how a medication will react with one's body composition.

Also do not use flea collars on your pets! They will cause a chemical burn or worse. I've used Revolution (from the vet) with no issues. Sorry to hear about your dogs.

Heartworm testing is completely unnecessary on dogs that live in Canada and that have already been tested negative once. The tick responsible for creating heartworm infections must exist in high heat over a long period of time, which is unlikely in Canada. All this information is widely available online.
