A suspect is in custody after five people, all youths in their teens to 20s, died following early-morning stabbings in northwest Calgary.
The stabbings happened around 1:20 a.m. MT on Tuesday at an address in the 100 block of Butler Crescent N.W., police said.

According to neighbours, the youths had been celebrating the last day of university classes with a fire in a home's backyard.
Three males were pronounced dead at the scene while two others who were taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition, and later died, officials said.

One other person suffered minor injuries.
All those who died were in their late teens to early 20s, police said.
The suspect fled on foot but police arrested him about 40 minutes later with assistance from the K-9 unit. Investigators are not looking for any more suspects.

The homicide unit is investigating.
Nearby resident Doug Jones told CBC News he noticed about 12 to 20 university-aged youths at the backyard party.

“When it started to get dark, they moved inside and once inside, you wouldn’t even be able to tell there was anything really even going on. It wasn’t loud at all,” he said.

The suspect in a stabbing rampage at a Calgary home was an invited guest to the party where the rampage occurred, the city’s police chief said Tuesday, calling the killings the “worst mass murder in Calgary’s history.”

Chief Rick Hanson told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the suspect arrived at the house party on Butler Crescent N.W., obtained a knife and targeted each of the victims.
Hanson said the victims and the suspect will not be named until next of kin have been notified and charges have been laid.

He did confirm that the suspect is the son of a Calgary police officer who has served with the force for 33 years.
Calgary police say they were called around 1:30 a.m. MT to a home in the residential neighbourhood of Brentwood, where students had held an all-day party.

Five people were found with stab wounds, all of them in their late teens and early 20s. Paramedics declared three men dead at the scene. Two more victims, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital, but later succumbed to their injuries.

About 30 minutes later, police using canine units tracked a suspect in his 20s who had fled the home. The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the police dog pursuit.

While police have not yet released the suspect’s name, CTV Calgary has confirmed the man is the son of a senior officer with the Calgary police. Police say they are not seeking any other suspects.

Police are also not releasing the names of the victims until their next of kin are notified and autopsies are performed.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper tweeted his sympathies to the victims’ families, writing: “.@LaureenHarper and I send our condolences to the families & friends of the victims of the senseless violence in Calgary last night.”

It remains unclear what led to the violence as neighbours report they heard no commotion during the night.
Neighbours say the students who rented the house had been drinking at the home throughout the day without incident to mark the University of Calgary student union’s annual

“Bermuda Shorts Day,” which celebrates the last day of classes.
Doug Jones, who lives across the street from the house where the killings took place, says about a dozen students appeared to be having a barbecue in the home’s backyard in the evening.

“It was like a normal gathering; it wasn’t loud, it wasn’t unruly. Around dusk, they moved inside, and then we didn’t really hear anything,” he told CTV News Channel.
“We woke up this morning to yellow tape in the back alley here. I was in shock when the reporters told us what happened.”

The University of Calgary released a statement to say it is awaiting more information.
“The University of Calgary is mourning the loss of five young people killed early this morning in Brentwood. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed by Calgary

Police Services. Once details are confirmed by Calgary Police Services, the university will provide a further statement,” it said.
