Excuse us for asking, but what's taking the concept of a flying car so long to, uh, get off the ground? A "roadable aircraft" has been a geek's dream since the idea first surfaced in the early 1900s. Even Henry Ford predicted that a flying car was inevitable. However, the idea has lingered in relative obscurity — that is, until recently.

Next year, Massachusetts-based says it expects to begin delivering the Transition, a small aircraft you could drive home from the airport. And Terrafugia isn't alone, as several other innovators are about to unveil vehicles that are ready to fly and drive. Here, we spotlight three classic aerocars and six that are just coming out, or are close to it.

I find it funny they never mentioned the Mizar, based on a Ford Pinto (insert joke here). It was a real thing and here is the promo video for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzv4q5EEy1k

Now watch that and then read the Wikipedia article, it is tragic but at the same time hilarious for those who love black humour . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVE_Mizar

Whoever thought a flying Ford Pinto would be a good idea??

The thing is, the latest rendition of "the flying car" aren't really flying cars, they are planes that are road worthy. From an engineering standpoint it is relatively easy to make a plane roadworthy but insanely difficult to make a car, airworthy. You see, weight is a factor in flight. A road car is just too damn heavy to lift into the air effficiently. An airframe is all about using the lightest material possible.

I mean really, do you want people flying who have trouble driving???? It is chaos out there now and people only have to deal with 4 directions and you want to add 2 more? lol......
