For the smokers. You do have some rights left, not many but some.

Even if Ottawa transit riders stink to high heaven, bus drivers must keep their comments to themselves, says.
This follows an incident this week when a woman passenger reeking of cigarette smoke was asked by the driver to move to the back of the bus.
“They do not” have the right to ask a passenger to move regardless of how they smell, OC Transpo spokeswoman Jocelyne Turner said Friday, noting that the incident is under investigation.

“There are health and safety reasons that bus drivers can ask passengers to move for overcrowding purposes,” Turner said.
The Ottawa Citizen reported that Misty Parent, 29, had just finished putting out a butt when she climbed on board the bus, only to be asked by the driver to move to the rear because she smelled of cigarette smoke. Parent did not comply and launched a complaint.

It’s just the latest controversy to plague the national capital’s transit system.
A veteran Ottawa bus driver was fired in November after he was caught on video using profanity and threatening an autistic passenger.

On the same article I saw this video and made me sick. Why are some people so damn mean.

This is interesting.....at work, we had a staff meeting and one of my colleagues took a break to smoke. Then she returned and sat beside me. I immediately got up and move as I truly despise the disgusting smell of the infested chemical- ladden cigarette. Of course she stared at me with her evil eyes but I couldnt care less. Although I didnt say anything but I did make an effort to move. Yet for the bus driver, he has no choice but to stay in his seat and keep his mouth shut. However, he didn't. I can't really blame him though.....

I love those infested chemical- ladden cigarettes, but I love pipes and cigars more.

Just for conversation sake, have you ever worn cologne or after shave? How about women, ever smelled one's perfume?

I happen to be allergic to most perfumes (not so much the expensive kind) and when I worked in the corporate world, one position I had was in a/p and worked along side with 80 or so women who bathed in the shit. Not to mention being stuck on a crowded rush hour bus or subway with them. It's not like I just don't "like" the smell, it physically made me ill.

If you're going to "discriminate" based on smell, you have to do so for ALL smells.

(I'd just like to point out that one of the reasons you're so adverse to it peace is because when people could smoke anywhere, you built up a tolerance for it. Now that no one can smoke anywhere, anytime you smell it it is very obvious).

Like people who complain about cigarette butts on the ground outside many restaurants, bars, offices etc. Smokers were forced out there all in one place, so of course it will be more obvious. When we were allowed to smoke at our desks the butts were spread out everywhere and disposed of properly. (I'm not saying smoking in an office is right, when they banned it the office became a much more pleasant place to work in).

you would love sitting next to me

My nephew describes me as a cross between Indiana Jones, Crocodile Dundee and Isac the bar tender.

At my work, they do have a policy about cologne/ perfume which prevents people from wearing it. However its not strictly being enforced. I dont wear it nor the aftershave but I understand where you are coming from.

Honestly, I am just such a super pest when I am near smokers. I can't help it because the smell is absolutely disgusting. I am also allergic to it (I did get tested) as the smell often makes me sick. I often sneeze and my eyes become itchy and watery. The interesting part, I can handle cigars a bit better and this goes for 420 too.

No wonder during my university years when it was ok to smoke at bars, I was often sick. When I go home, I would immediately jump into a shower and throw my clothes in the laundry basket. There were times when a woman made a proposition to "hug" :) me and once I could smell her smokey breath, I would walk away.

I don't hate smokers but I hate the smell and it has this terrible ugly effect on me like kryptonite on superman. lol Does this mean I discriminate against smoker? I am not sure as I do value my health and if they value my health, they would smoke elsewhere. Yet I am still a pest when they sit beside me when they are not even smoking.

Regarding other terrible, pungent, reeky smell.....I am not as bad as the smell of cigarette. I remember when I was on a TTC, I innocently sat beside a homeless person. I didn't realize it until my nose was screaming for me to run! Customers/TTC riders wouldn't dare to sit beside him. They would actually move further back/front of the bus. Believe it or not, I stayed because I thought it was just rude if I got up and gave him the "oh my f...ing gosh, you smell" look.

Anyway, I am sure many smokers do not like me...lol

Did the driver scream at the smoker...or did he calmly ask the smoker to move further back of the bus....

wow..The driver cant even eat chocolate...are drivers even allowed to chew gums?

I was referring to the driver in the clip. I'm not sure about the driver asking the smoker too move. I don't think it's a big deal but I can see how it can escalate into an incident.

Bacon smells nice...:smiling:

not if you're a vegetarian.....charring meat smells like a wino's ass to us....

I know what you mean about the bars/clubs though. I hated it too......

T, you are a vegetarian? Really, no way, c'mon really?

yup.....not vegan, just vegetarian....no red meat, no veal, no pork....just poultry and fish......

(long story as to why, it wasn't voluntary)

I use to smoke...I have quit for over 10 years......In quitting I have become hyper sensitive to the
smell of cigarettes. I realize why the movement to ban smoking was in place.....
There are so many kids now with asthma and there are people with allergies.....

It is not like this person asked everybody to move put the woman who really smell
terribly with it. If this was going to distract him in driving why not.....If it was teenagers
being silly or even a person yelling on their cell phone, I think it would not be an issue.

UMmmmm (probably shouldn't bring this up) but wouldn't the bus itself produce far more toxins than the residual "smell" of cigarette smoke on a person?

How about while they were waiting for the bus. Wouldn't they have been inhaling toxins?

That's the thing that everyone (or at least most people) don't realize: they've been had. We talk about bait and switch here but the various governments pulled it on most of the general public. They have everyone SO focused on cigarette smoke, you failed to realize they aren't addressing the REAL health hazards....

Want proof? The brown haze over the city and the concentrated haze over each highway during rush hour....those sure aren't caused by smokers!!!!

Until the cars, trucks, buses and trains in this country stop stinking up my air I'm gonna keep enjoying a nice cigar.
