A study appearing in the included a startling statistic: 82% of marathon runners developed acute kidney injury during races. I sat down with the lead and senior authors of the study to discuss the implications, including ways that dedicated marathon runners can avoid kidney damage while maintaining pace.

Full disclosure: I'm part of the Program of Applied Translational Research at Yale as are two of the study authors, but I had no role in this study. I'm also an editor at AJKD but joined the editorial board after this manuscript was accepted.

F. Perry Wilson, MD, MSCE, is an assistant professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. He is a MedPage Today reviewer, and in addition to his video analyses, he authors a blog, The Methods Man.
