Top 10 richest Canadians: Forbes list reveals familiar faces and new kids on billionaires’ block
Forbes released its annual list of world billionaires today, with Bill Gates once again ranking richest in the world.
Forbes said there were 1,826 billionaires on its list this year, up from 1,645 in 2014. Added together, they were worth a combined $7.05 trillion, up from $6.4 trillion last year.
Thirty Canadians made the list. Here’s the top 10 — and a little bit about them — from Forbes
With a fortune of $25.5 billion, David Thomson and family again topped the Canadian list and placed 25th on the global ranking.
The third generation of the media and publishing empire founded by their grandfather Roy Thomson, Thomson Reuters stock makes up 70% of their fortune. David serves as chairman of Thomson Reuters and his brother Peter is co-chair of Woodbridge, the holding company that runs the family business. David, who is part owner of the National Hockey League’s Winnipeg Jets, is an avid art collector with pieces from Pablo Picasso and the world’s top collection of English romantic painter John Constable,Forbes writes.
2) Galen Weston with a fortune of $9.6 billion (131st globally)
Galen Weston serves as executive chairman of George Weston, the Canadian food and retail giant founded by his grandfather in 1882. Galen took the reins of Loblaw in 1972, and succeeded in turning the struggling grocery chain around. Today his son, Galen, Jr., oversees Loblaw, which bought Canadian drugstore chain Shoppers Drug Mart in July 2013. The elder Weston also controls Selfridges Group whose department store holdings include Ogilvy’s and Holt Renfrew in Canada; Brown Thomas in Ireland; Selfridges in the United Kingdom; and de Bijenkorf in the Netherlands. He and his wife, Hilary, created Windsor, a 416-acre luxury residential community in Vero Beach, Fla.
3) Jim Pattison — fortune of $7.5 billion (177th globally)
Jim Pattison started with single Pontiac Buick dealership in Vancouver in 1961. After more than 200 acquisitions, his Jim Pattison Group has become a huge conglomerate with nearly $6.6 billion in revenues and 36,000 employees. The company still sells cars but is also active in media, food and beverage, entertainment, agriculture and owns the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! chain.
4) James Irving — fortune of $6.5 billion (216th globally)
James K. Irving owns J.D. Irving, a conglomerate with some two dozen companies in frozen foods, retail, shipbuilding, transportation and more. It’s one of Canada’s largest landowners, with 260,000 acres in New Brunswick. His brother Arthur, also a billionaire, owns Irving Oil.
5) Joseph Tsai — fortune of $5.9 billion (248th globally)
As vice chairman of Alibaba Group, Canadian citizen Joseph Tsai’s wealth more than doubled after the company’s IPO in September 2014. He’s one of the company’s two richest founders, along with billionaire Jack Ma, and has helped lead a flurry of overseas deals for the e-commerce giant.
6) Loretta Robinson — fortune of $5.8 billion (254th globally)
The wife of Ted Rogers, Loretta Anne Robinson and her four children inherited a large stake in Rogers Communications, one of Canada’s biggest media and telecom companies, after her husband died in 2008. The company, founded by Ted in 1960, provides cable television, telephone, wireless and internet service to millions of customers across Canada.
7) Arthur Irving — fortune of $5.5 billion (271st globally)
Arthur Irving owns Irving Oil, which operates more than 900 gas stations in Canada and the northeastern U.S. and also owns Canada’s largest oil refinery.
8) Garret Camp — fortune of $5.3 billion (283rd globally)
Garrett Camp is the cofounder and chairman of Uber, the car-hire startup that has seen its valuation grow 10 fold in the past 18 months — to $41.2 billion. Uber competes with taxis across the U.S. and in 53 other countries. The often-controversial company is banned in several countries and was temporarily banned in India amid a regulatory battle over safety concerns. Camp also founded StumbleUpon — a Web discovery tool part Reddit, part Tumblr — that sold to eBay in 2007 for $75 million.
9) Emanuele (Lino) Saputo — fortune of $4.8 billion (330th globally)
Emanuele chairs the Saputo family’s global dairy business, which makes in $7.4 billion a year selling cheese and other milk products in 40 countries. Saputo’s father, Giuseppe, founded Saputo Inc. in 1954 after emigrating to Canada from Sicily. Emanuele expanded the business through acquisitions and took it public in 1997. His son, Lino Jr., took over as president and CEO in 2004. Lino maintains hundreds of antique cars and oversees an automobile enthusiasts’ club.
10) Mark Scheinberg — fortune of $4.1 billion (405th globally)
Mark Scheinberg and his father, Isai, built PokerStars into the world’s biggest online poker company. Founded in 2001, the company first operated out of Costa Rica, but eventually moved to the Isle of Man. PokerStars’ parent, Rational Group, which also owned Full Tilt Poker, was sold for $4.9 billion in August to Amaya, a publicly-traded Montreal company. Born in Israel, Scheinberg moved to a suburb of Toronto at age 13. He left college after one year, worked in the hospitality industry, and traveled for long stretches to Asia and South America, before getting into the online gambling business at age 28.
