France bans extremely thin models - BBC News

Seems silly, since there are extremely thin people. Models, are supposed to be clothes hangers, to display the clothes modeled. Not representatives of the human physique. All this hub bub over sizes seems silly to me. Some industries are shallow and represent how shallow we can be as humans, indulge or not, it's a choice. I feel the same about those who try and change junk food. It carries that name for a reason, and some like it, so again, indulge or not. Some things don't need to be changed, our choices do:)

Models must now provide a doctor's note when applying for jobs

Fashion models became very thin at the same time that birth control pills became common, Cristy. Most very thin women have a difficult time becoming pregnant; that's a big reason why they are so uncommon, and by corollary, in such high demand. In theory, and in group perception, a very thin woman represents infertility, and is, therefore, a symbol for 'recreational sex without repercussion'. A stout woman, on the other hand, has long been a symbol of fertility; all 'cave-man porn' discovered to date is BBW-based. There are lots of fat chicks because that is a successful body type, from a biological perspective. Because the type is common, it's market value is low; we value that which many may want, but few may have, and undervalue that which any can have, but few would want. Before porn and plastic surgery, almost all large breasted women were also hefty. That same demographic is now jealous, because many other women can have large breasts and thin waists, and large, rounded breasts, as opposed to large 'sag bags', that look better in a push up bra, and can't be seen clearly, with the lights off. Guys always have, and always will, like big tits. We're hard-wired, that way. They stimulate the little head. Once guys got to see them in photographs, or in person, with the lights on, they bailed on the fat chicks in droves. They wanted recreational sex, not procreational sex, and the fat chicks lost market share. That's why feminism started; the women who weren't getting laid decided to band together, to blame men for the sexual revolution. Since they weren't getting any, they didn't want anyone else to, either. Or something like that.

Good, as someone who has first hand experience in the fashion industry in multiple areas the unrealistic body type that is promoted by some designers is disgusting. 85-95lbs at 5'10-6'0 is not HEALTHY. Shouldn't force young women to starve themselves into permanent health conditions for "fashion".

@flash, interesting perspective and thoughts, although I'm not sure many when looking, are that deep into thought as to why they choose to find a woman attractive, nor do I believe that all men or even most men are large boob lovers. Regardless of *why* some are thin and others aren't...it remains that some are and some aren't. So why not allow some models to be. All sizes should be represented in the industry, imo, but and again, the reason why thin is so desired, especially in runway, is because the clothes simply hang better on them. I think it may be when the "supermodels" became in vogue, that models then became sexualized and body images and the models then became more vogue than the clothes the models wore. But healthy or not, models are seen as a particular size and shape, which isn't representative of the majority population, and I'm not sure that should change. What should change is how we perceive the industry. See it for what it is and educate those who think it encapsulates reality. It doesn't, it is representative of a very select few and even those select few are molded into images beyond their own . Models are clothes hangers, not health representatives, nor representatives of the female form, but that's just my view. If you want to view a woman who is representative of the norm or majority, don't look to advertising or models, look to your mother, teacher, sister, cousin, nurse, doctor, lawyer, or to anyone you feel is a role model, in your family, community, or city.

Juno, many fashion designers are gay, and that ultra-thin body type is similar to that of their preferred young male companions whom they might be imagining, when designing clothing of limited appeal. The 'heroin-chic' look suggests that women should spend all of their money on high priced designer clothing, rather than on food, and their facial expressions are often robotic.

Keep in mind that women's fashion is also marketed to gay men. The body image marketed is the image the fashion industry wants to market, not what most people think is beautiful. Intelligent people make their own decisions, and are generally unaffected by advertising.

The underage model who 'looks legal' is not uncommon, and many models are considered 'too old' by age 25. Someone who looks 20 at age 14, then parties 24/7 for five years, often looks 40, by the time they are old enough to drink legally in some locations. That's been the case, for 50+ years.

Here are some song lyrics about this subject:

Elvis Costello - This Year's Girl (1978)

Elvis Costello – This Year's Girl Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Billy Bragg - The Busy Girl Buys Beauty (1983)

Billy Bragg – The Busy Girl Buys Beauty Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

I saw Elvis with the Attractions twice in 1978, on different tours, but I didn't follow his career after that. In Billy's early performances, he was pretty much a busker/ social activist, telling Anti Margaret Thatcher anecdotes, with songs in between rants, to audiences of under 200, most of the time. It was just him, and an electric guitar. He was his own roadie, a (then) modern day 'folkie', in the protest song style of a Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, or a young Bob Dylan, but appealing to a 'punk rock' audience, rather than beatniks and 'early hippies'.

The "This Years Model" and "Back to Basics" CDs are out of print, but you'll find them, from time to time, in second hand music stores, if the owner knows music that will sell, when bought from someone unloading his old CD collection to buy something else. Former 'hit' albums often have no resale value whatsoever; they were meant to appeal to a certain demographic, fooled by advertising. Who would buy a 'Jonas Brothers' or 'Hansen' CD now?

Sometimes I just write funny shit, Cristy. Don't take everything so seriously.

High fashion was never meant to be for everyone. That's why the clothing changes every season. It's about paying lots of money for clothing that will be discarded as 'five minutes ago' by the time the general public adopts it. It's for being seen in, at night clubs that don't let the non-regulars in, but they're allowed to line up outside, behind a velvet rope. It's intentionally priced out of the reach of the window shoppers. Think: The residents of The Capital in The Hunger Games movies. They look ridiculous, but people affected by advertising want to look like them.

Pop stars have always dressed outrageously, since Liberace, Elvis Presley, and Little Richard in the 1950's. They sell an image to the naive, who fund the lifestyle of those who live vicariously through their lives. Who buys hip hop music? Welfare pimps, swag fags, and the unemployed, people who read about life, on Instagram and Twitter, instead of living life. The hit records aren't often the best ones; they're the ones that are marketed the best, and people think the music is good, because they hear it, all the time.

A lot of new music is only sold as digital downloads now, because the record labels aren't interested in the up front cost of the CD packaging. Instead of building a following by playing in increasingly larger venues over time, today's pop stars come from Disney Channel comedy shows, reality TV elimination competitions, and YouTube self submissions. The rest are creations of record producers. A skank like Iggy Azalea was given butt implants, facial plastic surgery, and Brooklyn accent lessons, for 'street cred'. She doesn't even need to have to be able to sing anymore; autotunes takes care of that. She's just an avatar, that sells units to the gullible, until something new and shiny attracts their attention instead.

Haute Couture, (high fashion), models are different from other types of models, LarryB. They only model clothing designed for people like Lady Gaga, (2009 version), to weird Europeans, and for Science Fiction movies. No one actually wears the clothing more than once, if that often. Rich people just buy the clothes, so someone else can't. You aren't supposed to ask why.

Interesting observation, Flash. I do know that most ladies prefer to wear a dress only once. I can wear the same black suit for 20 more years and none would ever mention a thing.

@flash, and sometimes I write funny shit:) Everything written is interpreted differently by each reader and not necessarily in the way the writer hopes . When you think I'm being serious, maybe I'm not:) I do agree with your interpretations of high fashion though, but I also find it offensive when you refer to someone, such as Iggy as a skank. That isn't funny. That maybe your opinion, but it's also a needlessly rude one. @LarryB, that woman would be considered slender and fit by most, other than those in the fashion industry.

Super thin runway model superstars are the champions of the hunger games. The models that cannot handle the schedule either quit, become obscure, or die. Only a few are meant to compete, and fewer still to thrive. Everyone else who cares is a spectator, to buy tickets and merchandising, to pay for it all. Duh. There are no fat runway models because little girls do not dream of growing up to be fat. That just happens to most of them, shortly after the age at which they hope to get married. If they spend their days dreaming of living in Barbie's dream house, they have less time to think about getting that dreamhouse without being swept off their feet by prince charming. Sweeping a fat chick off her feet without hurting your back is difficult, even for a fairy tale prince.

Once the slogan was Live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse; more recently YOLO baseball caps, for young people who have nothing going for them, other than youth, candles burning twice as brightly, for half as long.
