Most Humane Society's have good reputations for how they care for animals.
The THS is a tangled pile of shit. Try Toronto Cat Rescue.

Do not purchase a cat at a pet store.

Here's the link to Toronto Cat Rescue, it's been mentioned a few times...

and a couple others...

From what I've heard the Humane Society has made significant changes since re-opening, I don't know how that has impacted it's animal care and adoptions but it might be worth it to go take a look for yourself.

Another option is to ask at a vet clinic near you, they often have a cat or two that they are looking to help rehome.

Or you could go to an Animal Services in the city, really there is no good or bad way to give an animal in need a home. While I certainly agree with supporting responsible frontline organizations I certainly don't see anything wrong with going into Animal Services and taking home an animal in need if they are a good fit for your house and lifestyle.

If you still don't find what you are looking for take a look at Petfinder.

Good luck in your search!

Why would you want a cat?

Are you gonna have nookie with your pussy? That's a crime!

Are we gonna end up calling you crazy cat man?

Just asking? I know, this is where you tell me to fuck-off!

I have to give kudos to the op for looking to adopt as opposed to buying. There are so many great animals that need good homes why go out and spend your hard earned cash and support (possible) pet mills?

Good for you! I know you'll find a new special friend.......
