going "off the grid"

Or... You could just move to Jamaica.

funny you mention that, my ultimate plan is to sail around the world or run a bareboat charter in...jamaica....you know, be one of those guys tied up to the pier, hey mon, come on de boat, me show you a rea' goo' time out on de wa tar........ev'ry ting be irie......

Some of the coolest people I've ever met. Good times, good times.

hahahahaha you made me spit out my tea reading your post!

Oh tboy, you could run into Lisa-of-Toronto and her puppies while in Jamaica.

t-boy you should just hard wire your jaw directly into the grid itself, 'cause with the amount of time you spend 'running your mouth' on and on and on over infinitessimally trivial affairs, you could independently power up the entire North American continent all by yourself...LOL! :toocool:

Well, at least I contribute.....which is more than I can say for your post........15 posts since january? why bother?

ah, i've mellowed with age....plus working hard, and like right now, can only see outta one eye so it's tough to type, or read, or walk, or lol........

It is tough with one eye, I can sympathize with that. I had a patch for a week due to an injury and it's not fun.

Is it true because of reduced depth vision you're not allowed to drive a car??

I believe you can drive with one eye, but you'd have to get used to it.....I just drove back and forth to the surgeon's for a checkup and it does take some getting used to......I went for brekkie with my friend who drove me to the surgery and had to try 3 times to open the fricken door to the restaurant....I kept missing it......

There shouldn't be a problem retaining your licence if you were blind in one eye, I mean, they give licences to people without any arms.....or those paralyzed from the waist down...etc.....

I've gotten a temporary Handicapped permit - knee surgery - So when I pull into the handicapped spot I always am wearing dark glasses and I bring out a white cane.......

ok, here's a bit of a holy fuck situation...

Monday night i got home from work at about 5;45...i turned on my tv, surround sound system, pellet stove, the fridge came on, pump cycled a few times, had lights on, ran the toaster oven etc...i could tell by the sound of my gennie that it was running at about 1/2 capacity...that's about 2000 watts or 2 kw.....now i went to bed around 10:30....so that's 4.75 hrs.....so at (conservatively) 2 kw per hour x 4.75 hrs.....that's 9.5 kw hrs....since hydro one charges about $2.00 per kw hour, don't let the time of use price fool you, with debt reduction, taxes, distribution charges etc the price will always be between 1 and 2 bucks a kw hour....

so if i had been connected to the grid it would have cost me about $19.00 for the electricity i used.

I had filled the tank on the gennie and when i turned it off when i went to bed i had about 3/4 of a tank left...it's an 11 litre tank.....so overestimating i used 3 litres....at $1.32 per litre that's $3.96.....about 1/6th the cost of hydro one...can you believe that shit?????

Let's just say i used more fuel and less kw hours....let's say i only used 1 kw hour for 4.5 hours......that's still about $9.00 for hydro one and still less than $5.00 for the gennie...

And i found out they just raised the fricken rates again!!!!

btw, i was going to email my mp tony clement about this but since he's a politician he'll probably just look at this as an excuse to raise gas prices to a point where it isn't feasible for people to run on gennie instead of hydro

Here's a question for you T. Have you looked into wind or solar or anything else?
I'm thinking of moving again and this time I am thinking of building about 1300 feet from the nearest hydro.
I'm pretty sure that 1300 feet of wire will cost me my cock and balls.
Debating the "off the grid" route myself now.
But I'm thinking about a nat gas generator.

yes, i'm first going to start off with a wind generator and a 3 battery bank with 1000 watt inverter...that should cover most things i use at one time...tv, lights, fridge, computer.....with only 1000 watts you can't run everything, but it's a start.....i'm looking at wind generators because you seem to get more bang for your buck....you can get a 600 watt wind generator for around $750 whereas a 100 watt solar panel is around 500.....

one other thing i've read is that since solar panels are all sort of run in series, and the cells in each are interdependant, even one leaf on the panel can cut down production by as much as 20 percent since the cells after the one blocked can't put electricity through the one that is covered....

plus with solar, you also should install a solar tracker which moves the panels so they face the sun as it travels across the sky.

as for your distance from hydro....i don't know what the current prices are, but when i looked into it years ago it was something like $10,000 per pole and i think the max distance from pole to pole was 50 feet....so....you do the math....i also seem to recall someone saying recently they had some put in and it was 2,000 each....i dunno....all i know is it's fricken expensive....

i looked into propane gennies but they weren't as efficient as a gasoline one (the one i'm using). The one i looked at burned a pound of propane an hour, and that worked out to be about 25 per day as opposed to my 15 dollar gas one per day. Now sure, it had the capacity for more wattage, but still...cost is a factor.

I don't use a lot at the moment but you'd have to look at your consumption and calculate the per wattage cost of all the various types.

One thing i recently read up on is duo use gennies. I think that was what they were called. What they do is use water cooling for the engine and also they water cool the exhaust...then this waste heat is used to heat water to be stored in your hot water tank...otherwise this heat is simply vented to the environment....a neat idea.......

OH there are two types of systems you can install, grid tie and stand alone...there is all kinds of crap online about how if you generate excess energy and tie into the grid, hydro one will pay you for it....yeah, ok, at 10 fucking cents per kilowatt hour....then they charge it back to the customer at $2.00.

|If i generate excess i'll approach my neighbours directly and sell it to them at 50 cents per kw hour...not fricken 10....hey i was born at night but not LAST fucking night......

I can tell your frustrated but get used to it because energy costs are going to keep going up because our governments feel they have tapped into a money spring! Take a look at the surplus Toronto found and they will still cry poor. Where has the money gone that was saved from no snow removal bah hum bug. We are being robbed at the plugs, pumps and soon will be water and whatever else they can find to rape us with.

Trying to follow the math. Are there additional charges aside from the price per kwh that Hydro One tacks on. Just trying to see where the $2.00 per kwh is calculated. Based on their website, 12 cents/kwh is the rate during peak?
