The debate isn't whether school kids should be safe.....it's about how to make them safe. Some think that taking away a constitutional right would do it. Others suggest more freedom within that constitutional right. There are tons of options, but all I'm seeing is "Take guns away" and "Don't touch my guns". Like the father said, we have security in so many other places, why not put some more in schools? Armed guards would be a hell of a deterrent....but suddenly people want to worry about how much money the government spends on things. Some make wild claims about how the guards could just as easily lose their minds and go on a killing spree, or have their guns taken from them, etc. Metal detectors might help, but when they are put in schools, someone always comes up with a way to complain that they are racist or some crap. I think 2A advocates are willing to talk about the issue, but all they are hearing from many is that you just have to take away the guns.
Remember that "Hope and Change"....it's now just "something has to be done". It's all emotion with no real suggestion as to what might actually work. There is no magic wand that will end all violence against the innocent. Our laws are not set up to punish those who have yet to commit a crime. Bad things will happen and the goal should be to diminish them as much as possible but this pipe dream that we can end it all with one simple solution is an emotional cry, not a logical solution.
I can only imagine how bad it would hurt to lose my child to some evil bastard. I know people are hurting and scared. I just don't think the emotional response is the right one for this. We need to look at a variety of actions that can be taken, and their costs, and decide what everyone can compromise on. This "All or nothing, you are with us or against us" mentality isn't going to get us anywhere.
