Gunfire erupted Thursday near the U.S. Capitol, bringing a swarm of emergency vehicles to the heart of the government in response to an emergency that locked down Congress.Police also closed Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.CNN's Athena Jones, who was at a Senate office building near the Capitol, said she heard gunshots that sounded like fireworks.The FBI dispatched units in response to reports of shots near Garfield Circle, which is on the Senate side of the Capitol.CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash learned that one person was injured. No further details were immediately available.House and Senate sessions were immediately suspended.A Capital Police bulletin said reports of gunshots required "all occupants in all House office buildings to shelter in place.""Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows," the bulletin said.Authorities later lifted the lockdown, Bash later reported.​

The United States Capitol was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon following reports of shots fired in the vicinity of the chamber. A Capitol Police officer was injured.
The FBI was responding to the scene. A message from the Capitol Police ordered anyone in a House office to "shelter in place."
"Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows," the message said.

The House recessed, and the Senate went into a quorum call — dispensing momentarily with its official business — shortly thereafter.
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted: Shots fired outside the Capitol. We are in temporary lock down.
Colorado Rep. Jared Polis tweeted: There had been some short of shooting here at the capital, we r on lockdown awaiting more info.

WASHINGTON >> A Stamford woman driving a black car with a young child in the car tried to ram through a White House barricade Thursday, then led police on a chasethat ended in gunfire outside the Capitol, witnesses and officials said.

A law enforcement source identified the woman to the New Haven Register as Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist.
Police say they are searching the Woodside Green condominium complex in Stamford in relation to the shooting.

Tourists watched the shooting unfold on Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol as lawmakers inside debated how to end a government shutdown. Police quickly locked down the entire complex for about an hour, and both houses of Congress went into recess.

The pursuit began when a car tried to ram a security barricade blocking the stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the case by name and insisted on anonymity.

Witnesses said at least 20 police cars chased the car toward Capitol Hill, where the car crashed outside the Capitol.
Tourist Edmund Ofori-Attah said he walked toward the scene, curious about what was going on.
“Then I heard the gunfire” and hit the ground, he said.

Patty Bills, who works at Faith and Action, a Christian outreach group near the shooting scene, said she saw officers firing at the driver. It was not immediately clear whether the driver was armed.

Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine said the driver was in custody but he did not disclose her condition.
Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer said a child was taken from the car to a hospital but said he knew of no harm to the youngster. Ofori-Attah said the child appeared to be about 2 to 3 years old.

A police officer was injured in the traffic accident but Gainer said the injuries were not life threatening.
“We heard three, four, five pops,” said Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., who was walking from the Capitol to an office building across the street. Police ordered Casey and nearby tourists to crouch behind a car for protection, then hustled everyone into the Capitol.

“There were multiple shots fired and the air was filled with gunpowder,” said Berin Szoka, whose office at a technology think tank overlooks the shooting scene.
The shooting comes two weeks after a mentally disturbed employee terrorized the Navy Yard with a shotgun, leaving 13 people dead including the gunman.

Before the disruption, lawmakers had been trying to find common ground to end a government shutdown. The House had just finished approving legislation aimed at partly lifting the government shutdown by paying National Guard and Reserve members.

U.S. Capitol Police on the plaza around the Capitol said they were working without pay as the result of the shutdown.
People standing outside the Supreme Court across the street from Congress were hurried into the court building by authorities.

The White House also was briefly locked down after the incident at Capitol Hill and the stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the compound was closed to pedestrians.

All Connecticut Congressional delegates and their staff members are safe.
