A gunman has fired multiple shots at EC foodcourt about 1/2 hour ago, at least 2 taken to hospital so far, gunman still on the lam!

One dead, seven injured in shooting at Toronto’s Eaton Centre

TORONTO — Toronto Police say one person has died as a result of a shooting at the Eaton’s Centre in the city’s downtown.
Const. Victor Kwong says the person who died was found without vital signs at the scene.
Kwong says a total of eight victims have been identified as a result of incident with took place just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the mall’s food court.

He says of the surviving victims, two are in critical condition and one has life-threatening injuries.
Kwong says the shooter has not been caught and that police still know very little about what happened.
The shooting sparked panic in the mall which was packed with weekend shoppers. The centre was evacuated and roads around the mall were closed off.

The incident, which took place around 6:30 p.m. in the mall’s food court, sparked chaos in the area surrounding what’s called the largest shopping mall in the downtown core.

“All of a sudden a herd of people were just running toward us, a massive crowd of people screaming, running, freaking out,” said Hannah Stewart, 21, who was shopping in the mall at the time. “We saw this girl, sitting on the ground, and she had blood on her toes.”
That girl appeared to have been one of the victims and told Stewart she had just been shot.

At that point, police poured into the centre and began herding people outside.
“All these cops came running up and they started screaming at us to back off,” Stewart said. “They were screaming at us to run and get out.”

It’s unclear if the shooter has been caught by police, early reports said police were telling shoppers the suspect was still in the mall.
Marcus Neves-Polonio, 19, was working in the food court when he saw a man pull out a gun and start firing.
“It was unbelievable … It was out of the blue,” he said as he stood outside the centre. “As soon as I heard the gunshots, I ducked under the table.”

At least two people were on the ground, he said.
Erica Solmes, who manages the McDonald’s in the mall’s food court said she heard 15 shots ring out before a stampede of people made a dash for the exits.

At least two people were seen being carried out of the mall on stretchers, one of them a male with an oxygen mask on.
The area around the shopping centre was quickly blocked off after the shooting and the Eaton’s Centre itself was evacuated and closed down.

There were at least a dozen police cars at one corner of the Eaton’s Centre and at least five ambulances were heading to the scene. Yellow police tape marked a perimeter outside the centre, shutting off portions of some downtown streets.
A portion of the Yonge subway line, which services the mall, was also shut down.

Police spent much of Saturday evening trying to clear out thousands of people who were milling around outside the centre, mostly trying to figure out what happened.

The Toronto police tactical squad was the scene. Officials did not immediately comment on exactly what happened.
It’s not the first time the area has seen gunfire.

In 2005, a 15-year-old woman was killed and six others were wounded on Boxing Day, 2005 when shots rang out just north of the shopping centre.

Jay third baseman Brett Lawrie was there when it happened and got the hell out of there as fast as possible.

This sh#t is disgraceful and the culprits need to be dealt with severely.

Time to make an example of these sub-humans.

A horrendous event, victimizing the entire city of Toronto. I was reading the star online when I clicked on the shooting that just happened. I saw a thread of tweets, saying a young woman was down. It said the shooting happend by the Sport Check in the food court. My daughter works right there in that area of the food court, as well as another job at dundas, but I did't know which work she went to today.

I lost it. I lost it big ...omg I don't ever wanna feel like this again. I was freaking. I called her and she did not answer. I called her work and no one answered then I called her other job and screamed at her bosses to tell me if my daughter was there. She was but I had to go see for myself.

Im still in shock, its an unimaginable feeling, it's crazy. I'm just calming down now but when I first heard the news I trully lost it.

Don't blame you one bit. I would have reacted the exact same way.

I heard that the gunman had his victim picked for whatever drug or gang related reasons. But Commissioner Blair did make a good point on the radio. Why keep on shooting when you already got your man. Either this person is high on drugs or just mean.

A 13 year old should not be suffering this injury. It does make you wonder if the all being God does exist. Now that is another subject for further discussion but really. Why does it happen to the ones not looking for problems?.

damn i m still trembling, what sick sick event - now broadcast all over the world ..Toronto eh

I don't get why this person had to shoot up the Eatons Centre. Cameras all over the place, is this the only place he had to target his victim? Seriously you wanna kill somebody why do it in mass of ppl, children, elderly and security and police all over downtown.

ughhh Im disgusted

You are correct that it victimizes an entire city. Who wants to go there now?

Ok, seriously, what is one to do in a situation like this, run into a store because they have to close the doors and keep everyone inside. I am wondering why there wasn't some sort of PSA or internal horn/siren. What I saw watching from my armchair was one security officer saying get out of here.

Why do people stand around outside? Answer is because they are idiots! The shooter could have been in the crowd; you know blending in.

I was chuckling so hard, I had tears in my eyes watching this one asian gentleman standing behind the cutie reporter from CP24. Wherever she moved, so did he to stay on television. LMAO.

Tragic absolutely.

Now, honeybee, it's good to know that your child is safe.

Honeybee are you an escort?

There is only one more remark I'll make and that if people really knew the types of people that are on the streets everyone would become agoraphobic and the outcall service would blossom.

Gang related for sure but why shoot the innocent?.

Now, now, it's not nice to assume that it's gang related. This could have been anything. Maybe it was because of a girl/woman, pet, car.

As usual, the innocent get in the way of someone that doesn't know how to use a firearm.

No one should be suffering any of the injuries! Man, a pregnant woman was toppled and labour had to be induced. Just think of all the mall employees that should go off with PTSD and just screw-over the wsib, eaton centre (cadillac-fairview)? Can you say, happy dance.

The only smart one in the entire place, he ran immediately.

I sit here and see comparisons between Toronto and Seattle

Seattle has experienced its 19th murder this year as compared to 21 for all of last year.

The blind eye turned towards drug use and sales is the key to this violence.
you want to know what happened you need to realize that you and the police have become numb to crimes and accept violence as part of you make up

Jane Creba was the first thought in my mind when I learned about yesterday's shootings.

There are many surveillance cameras in the eaton center, the shooter's image would have been captured multiple times as he got away, hope fully this will lead to a quick ID of him by the police resulting in a quick arrest.

Years back I was attacked by a man with a knife

I told him he was going to be real embarrassed when he told the medics he was cut with his own knife (before he moved with it)

So when the ambulance came he had little to say.

Pull a gun on me and you might want to consider the fact you will be shot with it

Have you studied martial arts or been in the military pops?

It's an terrible situation to be in and Honeybee I'm happy your daughter is ok, I would have flipped just like you and probably have bolted down there to find her. I hope they find this dirt bag face down in an alley with homeless people pissing on him.
