I have two hard drives sitting in my safe that I'd like to have stripped.

But I'm wondering, can the person doing it see what's on there as it's being done?

In my experience, the program that wipes a drive doesn't display anything while that's happening.

But if you leave the drive with someone to do the job, no telling what snooping goes on before they strip it.

Oh, Oh, Silly do you have naughty pictures and videos? They're probably of the time that you stole my date and I had to look out the window!

I don't believe they do look at the pictures, they must be some juicy pics!!

My problem with my hard drive is it keeps showing full when it's not. I installed Kaspersky 2012 last week, cleaned out a few viruses and now my hard drive is full no matter what I delete.

If you have a spare computer that you are not using and want to go the Nuclear option, as in wiping the whole Hard drive out then use DBAN - https://lifehacker.com/5090567/dariks-boot-and-nuke-is-the-nuclear-option-of-secure-data-shredding, you will need to unplug the original Hard drive and plug the Hard drives that you want to wipe into the spare computer. Then use the DBAN disk it will wipe all your data out. This option does not require to go into windows so will be the more secure option if you don't want anyone to see your data, but it's a bit more technical.
You can also use File shredder, https://download.cnet.com/File-Shredder/3000-2144_4-10662831.html?tag=dropDownForm;productListing
This option requires to go into Windows so you may run into the issue of the person wiping your drive seeing your data, but it's the easier option.
The least risky option IMO is to be there with the Technician when He/she wipes your data, this way you know they didn't see or copy anything.

Why not just take a hammer and shatter the disc? Harddrives are so cheap these days. Easier to just physically destroy the old one and buy a new unit.

That would work also. But Hard drives are going up in price because all the factories in Thailand were flooded two month ago during the raining season.

Someone else suggested a sledgehammer, but I guess a regular one would do the trick as well. This seems the simplest option, thank you. :great:

I did not steal your date, she was all over me!!! You really should try dating girls who like boys sometime. :na:

And as usual you give me no credit whatsoever for not letting her unzip my jeans while you were so busy looking out the window, thereby keeping all nakedness above the waist. I was doubly glad about that later, when you finally got into her pants and found that 70's jungle...did she like the weedwhacker? :rofl1:

What's on the hard drive, pics of yourself? They're protected in the safe, it's okay.
Save them for old age to remind people how hot you once were.

I am a little concerned about pics, but moreso about financials, emails, etc.

Smashing them does seem the most simple...and fun.

Hard drives

For a second I got exited. I thought it was going to be another of your sexual threads

You could also use a really powerful electro magnet to wipe them clean...(remember the scene from the movie fight club?).

Even smashing them with a hammer isn't fool proof. You have to actually destroy the small discs inside. According to the movies, even a burnt hard drive can be at least partially recovered.

It all depends on what is on the discs and how badly someone might want to view them. For eg: if homeland security will be interested in the data, then I would take apart the drive, and destroy each disc individually. If it is just personal, any of these methods will work.

Robin:

As for the full hard drive: windows uses a page file as "virtual memory". If in your settings it isn't limited, windows will use up all free space. Let me know is you're using XP and I can send you instructions on how to correct this.

You might also want to run the defrag option in windows. Sometimes the open areas are so small and fragmented windows won't see them as usable space....

BTW: I almost went to blows with an ex room mate because he accused me of stealing the memory out of his computer because he kept getting the message "out of memory" lol.....the moron......

I wouldn't know where to begin looking for a powerful electro magnet. :dontknow:

No its just personal stuff on there. I think if I smash them thoroughly and slip them into a full dog-poop bag, I'll be able to sleep at night without worrying about my pics showing up on GHM.

Thanks for the help. :smiling:

Face your GHM fears head on, be in control of which muff pic is posted on the site!

The thing is, you have to make sure the actual discs inside are destroyed otherwise the data can be retrieved. Even dog poop will dry out and simply fall off. So if an archeologist is some distant future is excavating the dump, they might pull them up!

I mean, seriously, a regular old windows delete should be sufficient. The odds of someone getting their hands on the drives, then either having the expertise or deep pockets to do a forensic data retrieval (last I heard it was $250 per hour with an average cost of $1000) are pretty slim.

You do sound like an ex of mine who was all up on making a home made porn using an 8 mm video camera. She had second thoughts after a couple of weeks so she had me erase it (I just recorded a blank signal so it was all snow). Even after fast forwarding through the whole tape she still didn't believe I deleted it and was harping and harping and HARPING so I got fed up and took my sledge and smashed it to bits. Then (of course) she was all "you didn't have to do THAT you freak..." Jesus lol....
