'Dry-eyed justice': Judge questions impact of victims on rulings

Hooked on pain medication, Steeves lied to her parents, telling them her life was in danger and she needed money to pay extortionists threatening her. The parents drained their life savings, drew cash advances, went without their own medication to save money and sold their cars and furniture to give her $400,000 over two years in a misplaced bid to help. She used the money to buy drugs.

Maternal love is blind dude. I feel for the parents as well as others that have gone though this anguish. There are crack heads out there that steal family and friends' TV, jewellery etc... for a quick fix.

Sadly I know of a few that had to go through this. But isn't this thread more about the judge's ruling?

I lend someone $20 bucks once and she used it to buy crack......

The thing is, I don't know why the judge's sentence was overturned, two years, four years, she'd be out in 6 months anyways. Oh wait, she didn't use a gun, if she did, she'd probably be out in 2.......

I know the system is supposed to be emotion free but come on, PUNISH those that break the law....she ruined her family.....luckily it was only HER family not someone else's.

And yes, the parents should have woken up and smelled the coffee after the first $10K but crackheads con family courts too so it isn't surprising. I know of one case where there were 3 witnesses including the daughter in question who testified that the mother was a crackhead AND there was an arrest record for possession yet mom still got custody of the kid........

Personally, I think anyone who has been found guilty in cases like this (miling someone of their hard earned cash) they should be put to work in the prison system and every cent they earn, goes back to those they victimized. If it takes the rest of their lives? so be it.

I agree, I don't "lend" money anymore after a few encounters with SPs and lending. If someone needs money and I can spare it, I'll "give" it to them. Whenever someone says "I'll pay you back" the thought that runs through my head is "yeah right"....
