It's a shame that they let the wrong people become cops much too often. The type of cops that set this guy up want to boost their arrest statistics, and their overtime pay for court appearances, by arresting the same idiots over and over. The people who are trying to "do good" get busted, for showing up the pencil pushers who are licensed to do that work, and do so, when they feel like it.

I had a funny exchange with an attractive young lady on Saturday afternoon. Lately, cops have been busting 'likely suspects' for riding the street cars without paying, because they can't afford the cost of a token. She was standing at the corner of Queen and Yonge, wearing a sign that read "Free Ride" - she was giving away free tokens, to people who needed to use the Queen car, but couldn't afford it.

I walked past her, then turned back, walked up to her, and said, with a straight face, "I'm sorry, young lady, but you're under arrest for 'Soliciting for the purpose of prostitution'. She looked at me, and burst out laughing. I gave her a fist bump, and went on my way.

Honestly its the way the cops are trained, they do a job and follow the law to the letter, after that its up to the courts to decide. That also leaves the system open to abuse if the cops want to improve their stats or get someone off the streets for a while. In regent park we used to call it the spring cleaning, the cops would bust as many people as possible to get them off the streets before the busy season. Then they report their stats to the media telling they have made a difference.

I have to disagree with this. Many cops today think that, if someone calls 911, and wants to have charges pressed, they have a client, as if their role was the same as an 'ambulance chaser lawyer'. They think that 'everything you say can be used against you' means that they should only gather and record evidence that can be used against the accused. This is the 'dark side of political correctness', where any accusation is presumed to be true, and perps are convicted by the court of public opinion.

Not all cops are like that, but the percentage is way too high, and many of them lack the moral compass to understand that they are doing anything wrong. They see their role as more akin to a 'dog catcher' than a baseball umpire, because this approach benefits the police, at the expense of the public they are supposed to 'serve and protect'. They reward confidential informants, provided that those whistleblowers are not 'one of their own'.

That's always been a problem with certain cops, because they don't 'police each other', but it's gotten worse, in recent years. Authority without accountability and morality inevitably leads to tyranny. History has taught us that, over and over.

Cops need to change their Rambo style take no prisoner attitude and work with communities as opposed to this ridiculous got you mentality. They should concentrate on violent crime and criminals not poor folks just trying to get by.
