GM get's bailed out by the Canadian Government,, Profits are up but they still will be shutting down a plant in Oshawa and laying off 2000 people. The community will suffer and the 2000 lost jobs will mean more job losses for the community in general.

It's disgusting but we can't expect any help from Harper unless it's for the corporations and legislating back to work to take away bargaining rights!

Don't worry, GM will recant when the province and the city toss a bunch of money their way.
I say that maybe the respective Governments should have KEPT their percentages to simply say to GM and Chrysler... "Oh? You wanna move production offshore? Lower costs? We'll move MANAGEMENT offshore and keep production here thank you."

You've nailed out biggest economical problem on the head "offshore". How can we possibly compete? We keep hearing from the powers that be that we must be more competitive! Um, sure we can lower our wages to 2 bucks an hour boss and no benifits, SURE THING but the bosses of course do not want to lower their standard of living, OH NO they deserve nice padded bonuses whenever they streamline and cut jobs on the front line, yup nice system we have.

One more rant. The Fords started it with chopping union wages and benefits, they now find a surplus. Where are the plans to cut property taxes, HELLO? I don't hear anyone saying, WOW we have extra money lets cut taxes. Although now the non unionised workers and upper management are all being given a raise. Very nice optics indeed.

OK enough, I need to joke around, I'm going back to my fun thread before I have a coronary!!

As an ex-GM employee I'm glad to see it shut down.

I do feel for my friends there though.

I'll post more in depth when I get a chance and back up my points, but in a nutshell...

-Management are a bunch of freaking tyrants
-The union won't budge an inch on many (in house) issues and stirs up shit for the sole reason of pissing off management
-The hiring practices are bullshit
-Many great and productive ideas are lost for the sole reason that they are brought up by the 'wrong' people
-There are may people who should not be working there, but cannot be gotten rid of
-The working culture is just miserable

off the top of my head

My brother in law is a TTC driver and is actually actively looking to start his own business so he can escape what he calls a toxic working environment. I think the atmosphere has been poisoned by both the unions and management, something has got to give or as mentioned before we will see rioting in the streets.

I guess I'm lucky because I have a great boss. Mind you it costs me a lot of meat ball sandwiches and the odd container of Lasagne with a bottle of home made vino but a man's got to do what a man's got to do.:)
