AVENTURA (CBSMiami) – An Uber driver fought back during an attempted robbery near the Aventura Mall, potentially saving the life of himself and a passenger.
According to authorities, shortly after picking up his passenger, a Dodge Caravan cut off the Uber driver along the William Lehman causeway as they headed west toward Sunny Isles Beach.
“A male jumped out of the caravan with two guns in his hands,” said Aventura Police Sgt. Chris Goranitis. “He pointed them at the Uber driver, who also had a firearm in his car, which he was permitted for. He shot the subject on the scene, who was later pronounced deceased.”
A passenger in the Caravan quickly jumped into the driver seat and took off. Police said one other person was inside, as well.
Nearby residents were alarmed by the police activity, which shut down the road for a short time.
“You have to be very careful, no matter where you are, in any neighborhood. This is a great neighborhood, it’s very safe,” said Aventura resident Margo Stashower. “But you have to be real careful because there’s crazy people out there.”
Both the Uber driver and his passenger were taken to the police station for questioning. They weren’t hurt.
Aventura Police is speaking to a person of interest.
