New research reveals that promiscuous women who are more likely to have one-night stands possess wider hips.
Lead researcher Colin A. Hendrie of the University of Leeds and his team in UK wanted to see if hip width or waist-to-hip ratio was a better predictor of a woman's sexual behavior.
The latest study involved 148 women aged 18 to 26. All participants had at least one sexual partner prior the study.
Researchers measured participants' hips and had them complete questionnaires about their sexual histories including the age at which they lost their virginity, the number of sexual partners they had been with, and information about their past "emotionally significant" sexual relationships.
Researchers found that "one-night stand behavior" effectively predicts the number of people a woman has had sex with. The study also linked the number of sexual partners a woman has had with her hip width. Researchers noted that this correlation was not observed between number of sexual partners and waist-to-hip ratio.
Researchers said the study suggest that women with hips wider than 36 centimeters or 14.2 inches had sex with more people and engaged in more one-night stands than those with hips under 31 centimeters or 12.2 inches wide.
Furthermore, women who engaged in one-night stands in three our of every four of their sexual relationships had hips that were at least two centimeters or 0.8 inches wider than those who didn't have so many one-night stands.
Researchers believe the latest study suggests that women with wider hips are more promiscuous because giving birth is easier and less traumatic for them than for their smaller-hipped counterparts.
"Women's hip width has a direct impact on their risk of potentially fatal childbirth-related injury. It seems that when women have control over their own sexual activity this risk is reflected in their behavior. Women's sexual activity is therefore at least in part influenced by hip width," Hendrie concluded.
