As I recall the vessel and crew were holding their own until the pumps failed.

If she stayed in Harbor for the storm I fully expect the ship would have been wrecked.

Taking her to the sea, to the Captain, might have seemed his only option.

Myself I would have left her in harbor, boarded the night before the hurricane hit and toasted her one last time.

If she survived the storm I would have retired and never set foot again on a boat as Captain.

It really boils down to this statement

Being at sea is safer than being tied up. There's no way a boat can stay safely tied up or at anchor in a storm like that...his decision to try and sail through the storm was probably the best.

one thing I never agreed with was the decision to head for Florida.

With the time that was given I would have headed East and stayed ahead of the storm's edge.
Deep water is always a better bet.

With that said I have no idea what led the Captain to his decision.
Therefore I am just second guessing.

What would be awesome is if they made another replica HMS BOUNTY for the film.

She was an impressive vessel.
