No, I sent you a link which confirms the $100k figure. It just doesn't say how long it's for.

ok, a couple of things about that:

it states "have acquired a market value" meaning that's what people are paying to buy one from someone else. That isn't what the city is charging and i can see there being this value since the city only issues so many.

it also states that this is for a " taxi owner licence"....this to me means that it isn't per car, it is per owner and from what i understand, an owner can own multiple cars.....

I look at this like my master business licence.....it doesn't restrict me to only doing one thing, such as building decks, i can do decks, bathrooms, framing, drywall etc etc etc....and it is good for life......(or so i understand at this point).

You have to think about it for a second.....even if it is for life, what cabbie could afford to pay 100K in order to make $15K per year? it would take him 8 or 9 yrs just to earn enough to pay for the licence and he'd have to work 2 other jobs in order just to make rent, groceries etc.......

You can't buy a stapler without a stapler license and without proper training and a first aid course.

Do you carry your stapler concealed and if you do you should have a permit for carrying a concealed stapler!

Yeah that is likely, but whether the city charged that initially or not the effect is the same. And since they are not issuing new licenses the cost has skyrocketed.

That is just loose wording in the article, because what they are actually paying for is the taxi license plate which means it is per car. It can be transferred to another car, but only after notifying the city.

In this city you definitely don't make only $15k/year, as there are few rides left that won't cost you less than $50 at least. Plus most of the cabbies don't own the car they drive, they mostly rent the ride from an owner who profits off them.

Here is another article with some background about the system here:

ok, about that $50 cab ride....according to the breakdown of costs on one of the links 23% goes to fuel....10% for rent, dues, etc. 7% repairs and maintenance, 6.2% insurance.....

(sorry, upon closer examination fuel makes up 23%, wages is 50%)......so that means the cabbie gets $25 for that ride. Now deduct 30% off the top for deductions at source, that leaves what, $18 per ride to the cabbie. How many can he do in a shift....8 maybe 10? That's $180 take home (maybe).

Yeah, that's more than $15K but we haven't talking about the rent of the cab yet either.....

Depends, they usually hang around the airport and shopping centers, so there's always a steady stream of customers there. At night, there would be the drunk bar crowd trying to go home, and the rest is dispatched through the cab company. There really is only one cab company in town, Blue Line, as I said, these outrageous prices have destroyed competition in this town, and we now have a semi-regulated monopoly. That second link I sent you is a story about how the taxi industry has fallen on hard times in this town: no kidding, who can afford a cab here? In NYC, you can get a cab that goes quite large distances for $10, but they have competition. It's too late to introduce competition in this town, with the high licensing fees, there are now entrenched interests in keeping the status quo to prevent competition.

Same thing is going to happen to the SP industry if they set outrageous license fees. It'll get dominated by a few huge agencies.
