Some neighbours question why their New Westminster apartment building has no security cameras. Two women, both of whom worked as online escorts, have been found dead this month in the apartment complex. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over both investigations. Homicide investigators have been called in to probe the suspicious deaths of two online escorts in the same New Westminster, B.C., apartment complex.

The first woman, Jill Lyons, 45 was found dead in her apartment on the 200 block of 11th Street on August 12. The cause of death was unclear and police are still awaiting the results of a toxicology report.

The second woman, Karen Nabors, 48, was found dead in her home in the same apartment building on Sunday. Police say evidence indicated foul play may have been a factor in the death.

Police say the women knew each other, and as a result of the similar nature and geography of the two deaths, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over both investigations.

"Investigators know both women were engaged in a high risk lifestyle and were working as online escorts," said Sgt. Jennifer Pound in statement.

"IHIT’s priority is to reach out to all escorts and remind them of the risks involved and to take extra precaution as it is unclear at this point why, or even if, they are in fact being targeted."

UPDATE: TWO FEMALE ESCORTS DEAD – PUBLIC WARNING ISSUED

Following the public warning issued yesterday by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, there have been some concerns raised over the timing of the warning.

“As police officers we are morally, ethically and legally responsible to balance the protection of the public and the integrity of the investigation. In cases, where suicide is a possibility, there is a particular emphasis on the protection of information in order to be empathetic and understanding to the sensitive issues that surround some of our cases,” says Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

Upon first response, there was evidence to suggest that the death of Jill Lyons was a suicide, however, the New Westminster Police continued to process the scene as a suspicious death in order to retrieve any and all evidence that could be located.

Given the fact that Karen Nabors was found within the same apartment complex and both women were known to engage on-line as escorts, IHIT has conduct of both investigations.

As it stands, both deaths remain suspicious and the investigations are in the early stages. Foul play has not been confirmed nor has it been ruled out. Further analysis will be required before these questions may be answered. The autopsy for Karen Nabors is scheduled for today and toxicology results are pending for both victims.

IHIT continues to ask those individuals engaging in a high risk lifestyle to take extra precautions.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in conjunction with the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) is asking the public to be vigilant following two separate suspicious deaths.

The first incident occurred on August 12, 2013 just before 10:00pm, when the NWPD responded to the sudden death of 45 year old Jill Lyons, at an apartment complex in the 200 block of 11th Street. It was unclear on the cause of death and an autopsy showed inconclusive results. As it stands, investigators are awaiting the toxicology results to assist in determining the cause of death.

The second female, 48 year old Karen Nabors, was located deceased in her home on August 25, 2013. The NWPD were dispatched to the same apartment complex on 11th Street and evidence retrieved supports that foul play may be a factor.

The two victims were located in their own apartments within the same apartment complex and they were known to each other. As a result of the similar nature and geography of the two deaths IHIT has taken conduct of both investigations.
